The festival officially kicked off at Joe's Pub on May 5th and began performances on Wednesday, June 7th when two-time Tony Award winner Savion Glover and Tony Award and Grammy Award Nominee Reg E. For the past 10 years, Inwood's UP Theater Company has provided a creative space for new plays to be seen and heard, and to engage communities in Northern Manhattan with their work. Their latest production, the darkly comic fable a?oeA Barn Playa?? presents a group of farm animals rehearsing a show. But tensions rise and their art falls apart as the mother animals realize that their young offspring are being taken away. The world-premiere of Lizzie Donahue's a?oeA Barn Playa?? begins March 18 and runs through April 4, 2020, at the Good Shepherd/Inwood Academy Space at 108 Cooper Street. Directed by Melissa Moschitto, Founding Artistic Director of The Anthropologists.

Atar Hadari's penetrating new play, Merciful Father will open UP Theater's seventh season. The World Premiere of Merciful Father will runNovember 1st through November 12th in Northern Manhattan. The play is based on Sholem Asch's scandalous Yiddish play God of Vengeance which was the inspiration for Paula Vogel's new play, Indecent which premiered at the Vineyard Theatre last season. God of Vengeance premiered on Broadway at the Apollo Theatre in 1923 and featured Broadway's first lesbian kiss. The play was so far ahead of its time, the actors and producers were indicted for giving an immoral performance. Atar Hadari's, Merciful Father is a proactive new take on the story. The production is directed by UP's Artistic Director, James Bosley who has premiered three of his play with UP, including the critically acclaimed productions of Broad Channel, and Epic Poetry.

UP Theater, under the direction of Artistic Director James Bosley, celebrates its seventh season of premiering penetrating new plays. Atar Hadari's provocative play Merciful Father will open UP's 2016-17 season in November and will be followed by the World Premiere of Lost/Not Found by Kirby Fields. The season will also include their annual benefit Onward & UPward in early 2017, Showing UP Artist's Salons throughout the year, and Dead of Winter Reading Series which takes place over four Sundays in January 2017.

Northern Manhattan's UP Theater Company celebrates its sixth season with, An American Drum Circle written by Washington Heights playwright, Vanessa Shealy. Vanessa's previous plays include Tea in the Afternoon (Theatre Row), One, Two, Whatever you do… (FringeNYC) and Inside Information (co-written by Rick Younger) which was just accepted to the 2016 New York International Fringe Festival. Melissa Attebery, who has directed for Primary Stages, The Abingdon, and Queens Theatre in the Park, directs. Vanessa and Melissa have collaborated on various projects since they met at the Actors Studio Playwright and Director Workshop over ten years ago.
