BWW Reviews: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Zombie Joe Style

A Steam-Punk chorus of cadaverous ghouls, zombified and singing Christmas carols in twitching harmony is about as far from traditional as you can get, and quite possibly the most satisfying prologue for A CHRISTMAS CAROL I've ever seen.

BWW Reviews: CHRISTMAS CAROL at Center Rep The Best Around

The most Scrooge among us would crack a smile at Center Rep's 'A Christmas Carol.' Although the old miser may balk at the cost of extravagant special affects and lovely costumes, or even at the time-honored message of hope and love, it's impossible to avoid laughing when the unseen Ghost of Christmas Present knocks a cup of punch from an overconfident young man's hand. Or consider the confetti that shoots out into the audience and the snow that gently falls down to cheerful faces.

BWW Reviews: CATCO's A CHRISTMAS CAROL Proves Great Things Come in Small Packages

This production is filled with so many novel approaches while maintaining the classic's integrity, that viewing it was much like unwrapping a gift. And don't let its humble 8 member cast fool you- good things do come in small packages. Arguably the best set designer in town, Michael S. Brewer creates a first impression in his lovely 1940's abandoned London theater set that immediately intrigues audience members as being both non-traditional and perfect, all at once. Director Joe Bishara combines the traditional tale with Patrick Barlow's twist- a group of actors who perform the play in said abandoned theater, and creates memorable scenes with a dynamic cast of only a few performers who play multiple roles, and a vintage marionette utilized as Tiny Tim.

BWW Reviews: Hartford Stage's A CHRISTMAS CAROL Gets a Few Updates at its Old Haunt

Apparently quite a few (more than 250,000 have seen the Michael Wilson adaptation getting its 16th run at Hartford Stage). This year's annual holiday tradition gets a bit of an update, all supervised by Wilson and directed by Maxwell Williams, that includes redesigned costumes; enhanced flying effects and choreography for the ghostly apparitions; the introduction of additional characters; and the latest in lighting design technology.

BWW Reviews: Next Stop Rings in the Season with JACOB MARLEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL

Have you seen enough of Scrooge, His Imperial Crankiness? Are you ready for another take on the old tale? Herndon, Virginia's Next Stop Theatre has just the thing: a production of 'Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol' a one-man marvel performed. As performed by the lithe and wily Ray Ficca, Marley takes us through the trials and tribulations of being not just Scrooge's long-suffering partner, but also his eternally-suffering guardian angel.

BWW Reviews: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Marks 36th Consecutive Year at Theatre Memphis

Charles Dickens' sentimental story of a miser's reform feels particularly bittersweet this year because 85-year-old stage veteran stage veteran Barry Fuller, who portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge when the show debuted at the old Theatre Memphis in 1978, has announced that this will be his final season in the role.
