Sometimes the battle of the sexes is not enough. The Drilling Company reads turf wars and class consciousness into its production of 'The Taming of the Shrew,' to be presented today, September 4, through September 20 as part of Bryant Park Shakespeare, directed by Alessandro Colla.

Sometimes the battle of the sexes is not enough. The Drilling Company reads turf wars and class consciousness into its production of 'The Taming of the Shrew,' to be presented September 4 to 20 as part of Bryant Park Shakespeare, directed by Alessandro Colla. In an intrepid adaptation, the popular comedy is transported to a modern New England fishing village, not unlike Martha's Vineyard, where Katherina is a member of the yachting set and Petruchio is a local fisherman.

Macbeth and Banquo reminded director Jesse Ontiveros of Fidel and Che, and that was the genesis for his idea to set 'Macbeth' in a banana republic for the Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot, in a production to be presented today, July 30, to August 15 in the parking lot at 114 Norfolk Street (between Delancey and Rivington Streets), behind The Clemente.

The original score is by Ian McDonald (King Crimson, Foreigner) and performed live by Mr. McDonald.

Each is the subject of a new play by Tom Jacobson, one of Los Angeles' most acclaimed and prolific playwrights. Circle X Theatre Co. presents Jacobson's The Chinese Massacre (Annotated), directed by Jeff Liu, opening April 22, and Ensemble Studio Theatre/LA presents House of the Rising Son, directed by Michael Michetti, opening April 23, both at the new Atwater Village Theatre where the two companies offer a joint season in 2011.
