The 2016 Tony Awards celebrated 70 years of honoring the best of Broadway last night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. On Sunday, March 13th at 4pm, Young Artists of America at Strathmore (YAA) presented the youth premiere of the new symphonic version of Children of Eden by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin and The Prince of Egypt). Schwartz himself worked as a guest mentor with the YAA high school-aged students. The cast, full symphonic orchestra, and chorus will include over 350 youth from all over the DC Metro area including 250 younger artists from North Bethesda Middle School. The performance took place at The Music Center at Strathmore (5301 Tuckerman Ln, North Bethesda, MD).
The award-winning composer and special guests perform selections from his catalog of stage and screen favorites like 'Magic to Do' from Pippin; 'When You Believe' from the DreamWorks' animated feature, The Prince of Egypt; 'Day By Day' from Godspell and several selections from the Broadway hit Wicked, including 'Defying Gravity.'
Vineyard Theatre (108 E. 15th Street) announced today that its production of DOT by Colman Domingo will extend its limited engagement through Thursday, March 24. Five performances are being added to the previously announced run, along with a special private student matinee performance as part of The Vineyard's education program. Directed by Susan Stroman, DOT opened Tuesday, February 23 with Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declaring it a Critics' Pick and calling it "Uproariously funny! Deeply moving!" and adding, "The cast is terrific."
The three-day 2016 ASCAP Foundation Musical Theatre Workshop in Partnership with DreamWorks Animation and The Wallis concluded tonight with a special scholarship presentation by ASCAP Workshop Artistic Director and Tony, Oscar and Grammy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz. ? Mark Cortale, producer of the acclaimed Broadway @ The Nourse concert series in San Francisco has announced that superstar Rosie O'Donnell will join this season's lineup on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Hosted by Sirius XM Radio Star Seth Rudetsky whom the New York Times dubbed "The Mayor of Broadway," the popular series returns after kicking off the 2015/16 season at The Nourse Theater with "Glee" star Darren Criss in past fall. Immediately preceding Rosie O'Donnell's performance will be Sutton Foster, star of the hit TV series "Younger" and Tony Award winner for Broadway's "Anything Goes" on Sunday, March 13th (rescheduled from Jan. 16th).
