CRITIC'S CHOICE: We're Back With Some Tips for Fall

We're back! After an extended absence due to The Last Five Years (we directed it to boffo notices from our critical colleagues), The 2015 First Night Honors (which played to SRO crowds at Chaffin's Barn in September) and a sense of overwhelming malaise and ennui (we are ever so dramatic at times), BWW Nashville's Critic's Choice is back on the interwebs, offering you our insights and advice on the shows that are coming up and what you should try to find time to see - or to avoid at all costs, depending on our perspective.

BWW Reviews: ACT 1's Dismal DEATHTRAP

And that, gentle readers, is just the first problem with ACT 1's season-opening production of Ira Levin's Deathtrap, a sturdy, if perhaps shopworn, theatrical thriller now onstage through October 17 at Darkhorse Theater. Directed and produced by Susan Cole, Deathtrap features a notable cast of experienced local actors who seem to be trapped in a plodding, uninteresting production of a play that's well past its projected shelf life. There's a lack of polish (whether among the actors' performances or on the surface of set pieces) and a pervasive sense of not knowing the time, place and environs in which Deathtrap takes place that is disconcerting and off-putting.

NextStop Theatre Announces Cast of DEATHTRAP

NextStop Theatre Company's 3rd professional season continues Halloween weekend with the opening of its production of the suspense thriller, Deathtrap. NextStop's production, directed by Producing Artistic Director Evan Hoffmann, will open Halloween weekend and run through November 22, 2015.

THE FRIDAY FIVE: DEATHTRAP's Dortch, Greco and Jackson

Today, we focus our Friday Five spotlight on the intriguing Deathtrap trio of Christi Dortch, Dante Greco and Judy Jackson, as interesting a bunch of actors as you'll find in Nashville. Get to know them better, then book your seats to see Deathtrap…

Photo Flash: First Look at Bruce Randolph Nelson, Deborah Hazlett & More in Everyman Theatre's AN INSPECTOR CALLS

Hailed as "the theatrical equivalent of a page turner" (The Daily Mail), An Inspector Calls is a gripping, psychological thriller. The respectable Birling family is at home hosting a dinner party in honor of their daughter's recent engagement, when an unforeseen knock at the door brings a sudden stop to the celebration. Enter Inspector Goole, who brings word of the unexpected death of a young woman. The questioning of each family member begins, dark secrets are uncovered and slowly the mystery surrounding the untimely death unravels.

The Saint Sebastian Players (SSP) are planning a 35th season featuring plays joined by a thread of illusion: a farcical black comedy, a provocative late Shakespeare work and a thriller edged with humor.

BWW Reviews: Scofflaw Playwriting, Standout Acting: ON CLOVER ROAD at Contemporary American Theater Festival

The action, from the shadowy world of religious cults and deprogrammers, takes place in the ruins of a derelict motel, where distraught mother Kate (Tasha Lawrence) has been brought by Stine (Lee Sellars), a supposed specialist in reuniting abandoned parents with cult-brainwashed youngsters. Stine intends (so he says) to abduct Kate's daughter from the cult's commune and work with her here. The shockingly scuzzy room tells us immediately is that something is terribly wrong with Kate and Stine's scheme. So does a financial fact revealed in the early going. In the course of the play, we find out what that something and several other somethings are.

BWW Reviews: ERIC COMSTOCK & BARBARA FASANO Open Beguiling New Show at the Metropolitan Room

Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano are in a really good mood. The infectious buoyancy of their new show at the Metropolitan Room, Shoulder Season (Don't ask me what the title means. Despite explanation, I haven't a clue.), will erase world news, ease arthritis, and make love seem possible again. Well, maybe not all that. Its warm, cheerful, sometimes exuberant musicality is nonetheless recommended for whatever ails you.
