The Human Race Theatre Company's mission to further the development of new works takes center stage with its summer Festival of New Musicals. For the seventh annual event, Producing Artistic Director Kevin Moore has selected Molly Sweeney: A Musical, an adaptation of Brian Friel's 1994 play by the same name, and created The Songwriter Showcase, a new concert production featuring a collection of songs from musicals in development by Festival alumni and writers new to Human Race audiences.

(UMC) continues its 2014 developmental reading series at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center with a special presentation of I Had a Ball, the 1964 Coney Island musical comedy with a book by Tony Award winner Jerome Chodorov (Wonderful Town) and a score by Stan Freeman & Jack Lawrence. The reading, directed by Ben West (Unsung Carolyn Leigh, The Fig Leaves Are Falling, Make Mine Manhattan), will be held Thursday, July 24 at 2:30 PM in the Bruno Walter Auditorium.

Producers, R. Erin Craig and Nick Galbraith announce a private reading of the new play, 26 Pebbles, by Eric Ulloa. Directed by Igor Goldin, the cast will feature Ann Arvia, Beth Glover, Dena Kology, Mike McGowan, Mamie Parris and Greg Roderick. The readings will be held at Manhattan Theatre Club rehearsal studios on Tuesday, May 6th and are by invitation only.

Cygnet has snagged the rights to present the Southern California premiere of Jordan Harrison's Maple and Vine, a sensation last season Off-Broadway at New York's Playwrights Horizons. Maple and Vine is a comedy about a couple who have become allergic to their 21st century lives and decide to move into a closed-community of 1950s re-enactors who forsake their cell phones and sushi for poodle-skirts, milkmen and Tupperware parties.
