In a high-risk world of quick profits and borrowed luxury, Timon is a financial god among men. The cast of Artistic Director Barbara Gaines' staging of Shakespeare's powerful, rarely produced dark satire is led by Tony Award winner Ian McDiarmid-an internationally celebrated actor whose credits range from performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company and on Broadway, to a turn as Senator and Evil Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars films.

Ian Merrill Peakes begins and ends his role as 'Timon of Athens' standing in the center of Folger Shakespeare Theatre's stage. At the start, he's basking in his glory as a prosperous master of the universe, happily dispersing his gold; in the end he's alone, torn down, penniless emotionally, at the mercy of gods, or fate, or something quite different than the riches that once defined him.

Times like these call for plays that directly address our anxieties; and Mike Bartlett's King Charles III is about as timely and necessary a play as we're likely to see. For all its indulgent verbal sprawl the Shakespeare Theatre Company has served Washington theatre audiences superbly, with a stellar cast and a politically taut drama written in the finely-tuned pentameter that once made, well, Shakespeare himself so famous.

Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC), in association with Seattle Repertory Theatre and San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater, will present Mike Bartlett's King Charles III, a modern history play, at Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street) from February 7-March 12, 2017. The co-production is directed by David Muse, Artistic Director at Studio Theatre and formerly Associate Artistic Director at STC.

There's always a danger in any kind of entertainment that the show will be hyped up so much that when you finally see it, it cannot possibly live up to the image in your mind. I largely think such is the issue with my lack of zeal over “King Charles III”, currently playing at the Seattle Rep. I had heard so much about this one on how funny and original it was but instead what I got was a play that while interesting, felt long winded and only offered me a few scant chuckles.
