SFCM to Host Fourth Biennial Rubin Institute for Music Criticism

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) today announces the fourth biennial gathering of the Stephen and Cynthia Rubin Institute for Music Criticism, a groundbreaking initiative for educational and financial support that identifies and engages emerging young writers in the art of classical music criticism and creates a sustainable funding model for professional journalists at news organizations across the United States. Taking place October 25-29 at SFCM and surrounding Civic Center venues, the Rubin Institute will, for the first time in its history, include jazz in its lineup of world-class concerts. Award-winning author, critic, essayist, and producer Gary Giddins will join the cadre of industry-leading journalists as guest critic.

PBS Honors Louisa May Alcott with 'The Woman Behind 'Little Women' Encore

A special encore broadcast of American Masters -- Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind 'Little Women' airs nationwide Sunday, May 20 at 10 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) and will be available to stream the following day on pbs.org/americanmasters and PBS apps. This special encore broadcast coincides with the premiere of Little Women on Masterpiece (Sunday, May 13 and 20 at 8 p.m. on PBS) as well as The Great American Read (Tuesday, May 22 at 8 p.m. on PBS), a new eight-part television and online series that explores America's 100 most-loved novels, including Little Women by author Louisa May Alcott.

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's first musical, Oklahoma!, opened on Broadway on March 31, 1943, and will mark its 75th anniversary this spring. That show, along with Carousel (whose new Broadway revival opens on April 12), South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music firmly established Rodgers and Hammerstein at the apex of the great age of the American Songbook.

Trinity Rep Announces THE PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE and Other New Play Commissions

Trinity Repertory Company is proud to announce the commission of a number of new playwrights and artists, including George Brant to write the stage version of The New York Times bestseller The Prince of Providence: The Life and Times of Buddy Cianci, America's Most Notorious Mayor, Some Wiseguys, and the Feds by Mike Stanton. Trinity Rep obtained the underlying rights to the book from Stanton and subsequently commissioned Brant to create a play or musical adaptation. The resulting script will go through a series of workshops to prepare it for production on the Trinity Rep stage in a future season. Casting will be announced at a future date. The book, which came out in 2004, examines the life and notorious political story of Buddy Cianci, the two-term mayor whose corruption led to federal investigations.
