Washington National Opera began what may be one of its more artistically challenging seasons Saturday with the most crowd-pleasing production.

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera will transport the audience to Seville, Spain in its new production of Carmen. Last performed by the company in 2008, Verismo Opera presents Georges Bizet's immortal opera on Sunday, April 26, 3:00 p.m., at the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC), 30 North Van Brunt Street, in Englewood, New Jersey.

Utah OperaArtistic Director Christopher McBeth today announced Utah Opera's 2015-16 season. The company's 38th season will feature four productions between October 2015 and May 2016 that encompass some of opera's greatest tales of love and sacrifice.

The Daily Mail writes that Nicholas Hytner has zeroed in on his first big project following his departure from the National Theatre -- a new version of Bizet's CARMEN with book by Lucy Prebble. Hytner led an informal read through of the new adaptation last weekend, and the production is aiming for the West End in 2016.

General and Artistic Director Michael Egel and the Board of Directors have announced casting for the operas of the 42nd Summer Festival Season. This April, the company dubbed "the People's Opera" will return to the venue known as "the People's Theater" for the first time since 1965, when New York City Opera returns to New York City Center, its original home. The residency includes new productions of Gioachino Rossini's Moses in Egypt, conducted by Jayce Ogren and directed by Michael Counts (April 14-20); and Jacques Offenbach's La Perichole, conducted by Emmanuel Plasson and directed by Christopher Alden (April 21-27).
