19 Musical Theatre Writers Announced for This Summer's Rhinebeck Writers Retreat

Founding Executive Director Kathy Evans announced the 19 writers and 9 new musicals selected for this summer's Rhinebeck Writers Retreat residencies.  For nine consecutive weeks beginning June 26, each writing team will have a weeklong residency in Rhinebeck, New York to write their new musical. This year's writers include New York Drama Critics award winner Brian Crawley, Tony nominee Hunter Foster, 2016 Kleban award winner Daniel Goldstein, Susan Smith Blackburn finalist Michele Lowe, Arlen award winner Georgia Stitt, Fred Ebb award winner Adam Gwon, and New Dramatists Loewe Award winner Sarah Hammond. The 9 musicals were selected from among 95 applicants by a distinguished panel: Kent Nicholson of Playwrights Horizons, Donna Lynn Hilton of Goodspeed Musicals, Barbara Pasternack of Theatreworks USA, Steve Stettler of Weston Playhouse, Mara Isaacs of Octopus Theatricals, Drama Desk nominated composer Neil Bartram, and Robert Zukerman, former Director of Theatre at the New York State Council on the Arts. 

The Public Theater Extends Stew & Heidi Rodewald's New Musical THE TOTAL BENT

The Public Theater announced today that THE TOTAL BENT will extend one week through Sunday, June 19. With text by Stew and music by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, the team behind the Tony Award-wining musical Passing Strange, which premiered at The Public in 2003, this world premiere musical is directed by Joanna Settle. Performances begin today, Tuesday, May 10 with an official press opening on Wednesday, May 25.

VINE OF THE DEAD to Play The Invisible Dog This Month

Jim Findlay's VINE OF THE DEAD, a performance produced by Joel Bassin and Collapsable Giraffe, presented by The Invisible Dog Art Center, will play three performances only at The Invisible Dog, 51 Bergen St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, May 26 - 28, 2016 at 9 p.m.

Rebecca Naomi Jones to Host Musical Theatre Factory's April Salon

Musical Theatre Factory (MTF) will present its monthly Factory Salon with guest host Rebecca Naomi Jones, and featuring the work of Justin Levine (Pepper and Sam), Sukari Jones and Ben Krauss, and Julia Jordan and Lisa DeSpain (Storyville) and performances by Jason Gotay (Spiderman, Bring it On) and Sara Kapner (bare the musical).

Jim Findlay's VINE OF THE DEAD to Play The Invisible Dog, 5/26-28

Vine of the Dead explores the place and meaning of ritual in the 21st century by attempting to communicate across the divide between life and death. In a series of 11 rituals, the performance channels personal experiences of death and transcendence while exploring the spirituality of skepticism.

Stew & Heidi Rodewald to Appear on Stage at The Public in Their New Musical THE TOTAL BENT

The Public Theater announced today that Stew and Heidi Rodewald will perform live with the on-stage band for THE TOTAL BENT, playing the guitar and bass, respectively. With text by Stew and music by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, the team behind the Tony Award-wining musical Passing Strange, which premiered at The Public in 2003, this world premiere musical is directed by Joanna Settle. Performances begin Tuesday, May 10 and continue through Sunday, June 12, with an official press opening on Wednesday, May 25.

Len Cabral & Charlene Carpenzano to Receive 2016 Pell Awards

?At the 20th annual Pell Awards, Trinity Repertory Company will honor local artists Len Cabral and Charlene Carpenzano with Rhode Island Pell Awards for Excellence in the Arts alongside previously announced honorees The Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis, Laurie Eustis and Elizabeth Chace. The awards ceremony and celebration will be held at Ochre Court on the Salve Regina University Campus in Newport, RI on May 23, 2016. Black Box Studios to Present PASSING STRANGE, 2/25-28

Black Box Studios presents a benefit concert of the Tony award winning musical PASSING STRANGE, with book by Stew, music and lyrics by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, and created in collaboration with Annie Dorsen. Directed by Matt Okin, with musical direction by Jane Cardona, and Huey Esquire.

The Kennedy Center's 2015-2016 World Stages series continues with three trailblazing, multidisciplinary works that are coming to Washington, D.C.: Laurie Anderson's Language of the Future: Letters to Jack (March 4-6); Monica Bill Barnes's Happy Hour (March 10-11); and Van-Ánh Võ's The Odyssey: From Vietnam to America (March 11-12). With a long history of presenting original international works, these programs reinforce the Center's commitment to presenting leading performers and companies from the United States and abroad, offering D.C. audiences an entryway to global arts and culture.
