German Govt. Inaugurates Thomas Mann House In L.A.; Free Conference At The Getty Center

In June 18, Thomas Mann House, a residence for scholars, will be inaugurated in Los Angeles.  The house will foster intellectual and cultural exchange between Germany and the United States, offer the opportunity to leading thinkers who are living or have lived in Germany to explore issues of contemporary importance, to generate fresh thought, and to deepen American -- German relations.

Folks Operetta Announces 2018 Season

Colburn School Announces Primrose Competition Live Round Competitors

The Colburn School and the American Viola Society today announced the 24 live round competitors for the 2018 Primrose International Viola Competition. During the pre-screening round that took place in the fall of 2017, 157 applications were received, the most in the competition's history. The 2018 Primrose International Viola Competition takes place at the Colburn School, June 10-16, 2018.

2nd Shanghai Isaac Stern Attracts Record Number Of Applicants

Shanghai, China, February 7, 2018-Organizers for the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition (SISIVC) today announced the final application numbers for the 2018 Competition. A total of 174 applicants were submitted - an increase of more than 22% from the inaugural competition in 2016 (142 applicants).

92nd Street Y Announces 2018-19 Classical Concert Season

92nd Street Y inaugurates three engaging new series - Chamber Orchestras, a Vocal Series, and Garrick Ohlsson: Brahms Exploration - ushering in a host of original concepts, artists, compositions, and collaborations, in keeping with 92Y's enduring traditions of cultural discovery, intellectual curiosity, and artistic experimentation.  Additionally, 92Y commences Inflection, its first interdisciplinary festival, a six-concert exploration of music in relation to other art forms, including spoken word, photography, sculpture, and dance.  This season also features the World Premieres of Phyllis's Portrait by Sergio Assad and Jonathan Berger's new opera Leonardo, the US premiere of a symphony by Hans Rott, the New York premieres of Wynton Marsalis's new work for solo violin, a new string quartet by Martin Bresnick, and Andreia Pinto Correia's String Quartet No. 1 "Unvanquished Space"; five major international artists making their 92Y performance debuts: Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov, German cellist Alban Gerhardt, Bulgarian violinist Gergana Gergova, the Danish String Quartet, and the Artemis String Quartet; several young musicians also give their 92Y debut performances in the pristine acoustics of Buttenwieser Hall for the Soundspace Series: Jessica Xylina Osborne, Einav Yarden, Conrad Tao (with violinist Stefan Jackiw), the Horszowski Trio, Juho Pohjonen, and Orion Weiss.

Lahav Shani Is Appointed Music Director Of The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra announces the appointment of Lahav Shani as its Music Director, starting from the orchestra's 2020-2021 season. For the 2019-20 season he will have the title Music Director Designate. The 29-year-old Israeli conductor and pianist will succeed Zubin Mehta, the IPO's legendary Music Director, who was appointed to the position in 1969.

In a remarkable find, a previously unknown composition by Kurt Weill was recently discovered in a Berlin archive. The three-page manuscript in the composer's hand bears the peculiar title 'Lied vom wei en K se' ('Song of the White Cheese,' lyric by G nther Weisenborn).

Jon Nakamatsu Fabio Bidini Headline 2017 ALOHA INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL

The Aloha International Piano Festival (AIPF) today announced that celebrated pianists Jon Nakamatsu and Fabio Bidini will headline the 12th annual music festival, which runs from June 17 to 25, 2017 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Nakamatsu and Bidini will join forces for one special afternoon at the University of Hawai?i at M?noa's Orvis Auditorium, in a program featuring beautiful masterworks by Schumann and Brahms, at 4 pm on Sunday, June 25. Joining Nakamatsu and Bidini are cellist Mark Votapek, violinists Sabrina-Vivian Hoepker and Ignace 'Iggy' Jang, and violist Emma Votapek. Tickets are $30 and are on sale now at aipf.ticketleap.com.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Celebrates BIG APPLE, 2/24-26
