American Symphony Orchestra to Present THIS ENGLAND at Carnegie Hall, 1/31

A concert by the ASO led by Leon Botstein that will debunk the myth that England's musical culture in the first part of the twentieth century was drab and unoriginal. World War One in fact marked the beginning of a new explosion of creative energy and this concert reveals it by highlighting works by some of the first modern British composers, including Arthur Bliss' suite from a film of H.G. Wells' apocalyptic predictions, Robert Simpson's volcanic eruption of a brass band, Frank Bridge's showpiece for piano and orchestra and a masterwork by William Walton, whose music came to embody the fortitude of the 20th century British character.

Gift Theatre to Present WAR OF THE WORLDS Halloween Broadcasts, 10/30-11/2

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles' spectacular, historic Halloween media hoax about Martians invading the earth, the Gift Theatre offers an alternate re-imagining of the infamous 1938 radio broadcast of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds. Artistic Director Michael Patrick Thornton's staged re-creation of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast is updated with locations shifted to 1938 Chicago. The performances, part of the Chicago Park District's Classics in the Parks series, will feature live music by the Chicago City Wide Symphony Orchestra and Foley artists creating sound effects as it celebrates the Golden Age of American radio. H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, A Radio Drama will be staged Oct. 30-Nov. 2 at Jefferson Memorial Park, 4822 N. Long Ave and Nov. 7-9 at Lincoln Park Cultural Center, N. Lincoln Park West. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles' spectacular Halloween radio hoax about Martians invading the earth, based on the H.G. Wells novel. In commemoration, Music Box Theatre presents a special screening of the 1953 film The War of the Worlds. Before the movie, University of Chicago Professor and radio expert Neil Verma will present excerpts of the infamous Halloween broadcast of War of the Worlds that convinced radio listeners the earth was truly under siege in 1938. Welles on the Radio plus War of the Worlds takes place Sunday, Oct 27, 1 p.m. at Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave. $10.

Mirror Theatre Company Opens WAR OF THE WORLDS Tonight

Just in time for Halloween, The Mirror Theatre Company at the Avery Schreiber Playhouse presents a stunning re-creation of the classic Orson Welles radio broadcast of WAR OF THE WORLDS. Orson Welles adapted H.G. Wells classic sci-fi story, telling the tale of Martian invasion via a string of urgent news bulletins. The broadcast scared people alright, but not in exactly the way Welles planned. Americans hearing the live broadcast believed that the country was actually under attack from space aliens. Set in a radio studio, circa 1938, WAR OF THE WORLDS uses the original script written and produced by Welles and a sterling cast of veteran voice actors.
