MAD to Present 'Richard Estes: Painting New York City,' Begin. 3/10

From March 10 to September 20, 2015, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents Richard Estes: Painting New York City, the first exhibition of the art of Richard Estes to focus on the artist's technique and process, through an examination of his New York City paintings, prints, and photographs. Spanning from the mid-1960s to the present and featuring over forty paintings and works on paper, the exhibition is Estes' first New York City museum survey. It is also the first solo painting show in the history of the Museum of Arts and Design.

MAD Welcomes Elissa Auther as Inaugural Windgate Research Curator

Featuring more than 75 designers, artists, craftspersons, and collectives, New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft and Art in Latin America will survey the innovative, cross-disciplinary collaborations and new directions in creative production that have been occurring throughout Latin America since 2000. On view from today, November 4, 2014 through February 22, 2015, the exhibition focuses on work emanating from a number of key cities that serve as cultural hubs for some of the most pertinent new ideas about art, design, and craft.

Joyce J. Scott's Glass Sculptures Exhibited With Signature Beaded Neckpieces for the First Time, Beginning Today

This fall, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents Maryland to Murano: Neckpieces and Sculptures by Joyce J. Scott, the first exhibition to examine the relationship between Scott's beaded and constructed neckpieces created in her Baltimore, Maryland studio and her more recent blown glass sculptures crafted in the Berengo Studio on Murano Island in Venice, Italy. On view from today, September 30, 2014 to March 15, 2015, this exhibition demonstrates the interplay between these two bodies of work and reveals the range of Scott's technique and skill as well as the complex relationship she has shaped among adornment, content, and methodology.

Discussion on Role of Luxury in Today's Society Set for MAD Today

Luxury in Today's Society: Between Excellence and Excess, a half-day program by the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) and by La Fondazione NY, will gather luxury brand CEOs and international academics to discuss and debate luxury's position today and map out a vision of luxury for the future. Moderated by Elizabeth Paton, US Fashion and Luxury Correspondent for the Financial Times, the program brings together an influential circle of experts, including David Yurman, designer and CEO of the David Yurman jewelry brand and company; Alberto Milani, CEO of Buccelatti in the US; and Enrico Libani, the US co-founder and CEO of Cesare Attolini, the exclusive Neapolitan menswear brand that opened a Madison Avenue flagship in 2012. They will be joined by professors of sociology, philosophy, and business from Columbia University, NYU, and Milano-Bicocca University, as well as by the authors of the just published Real Luxury: How Luxury Brands Can Create Value for the Long Term (Palgrave Macmillan).

A Founder's Vision celebrates Aileen Osborn Webb, who established the Museum of Arts and Design, then the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, in 1956. On view from today, September 23, 2014, through February 8, 2015, the exhibition explores how Webb, through her advocacy work at MAD and other leading institutions across the country and internationally, championed the skilled maker as integral to America's future.

Glenn Adamson Named New Director of Museum of Arts And Design

Lewis Kruger, Chairman of the Board of the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), announced today that Dr. Glenn Adamson has been appointed as the museum's new Nanette L. Laitman Director. Adamson, who comes to MAD from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, succeeds Holly Hotchner, who stepped down at the end of April. Adamson will assume his role at the museum on October 15, 2013.
