Virginia Opera Announces 2013-2014 Season - FALSTAFF, THE MAGIC FLUTE and More!

Virginia Opera, The Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia, announces its 2013-14 Season that features four, brand-new mainstage productions and two Special Engagement productions that span comedy, drama, farce and grand opera. The Company's 39th Subscription Season will open with Falstaff in September, followed by The Magic Flutein November, Ariadne auf Naxos in February, and Carmen in March. Special Engagements next season will include performances of The Girl of the Golden West in January and Sweeney Todd in May.

Guitarist Milos Karadaglic Joins the Atlanta Symphony, 2/7 & 8

Guest conductor Xian Zhang -Music Director of The Giuseppe Verdi Orchestra of Milan and former Associate Conductor of the New York Philharmonic- will make her Atlanta Symphony debut leading the Orchestra in Tchaikovsky's romantic Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and his Symphony No. 2, "Little Russian," named because of its basis in three Ukranian folk songs. Montenegrin guitarist Milos Karadaglic, hailed as a "new guitar hero" by the London Telegraph, will make his Atlanta Symphony debut performing Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez.

Chicago Opera Theater Presents THE FALL OF THE HOUSE USHER, 1/27

Philip Glass' The Fall of the House of Usher, a gothic horror story which blurs the line between the real world and the supernatural, opens Chicago Opera Theater's 2013 Season, titled "Power of Love, Love of Power." This is Andreas Mitisek's inaugural season as General Director of Chicago Opera Theater since assuming the position in June 2012. Glass' haunting 1987 score for Edgar Allan Poe's macabre masterpiece, with lyrics by Arthur Yorinks, provides the perfect backdrop for this nightmarish journey to the edge of madness. The Fall of the House of Usher, taking place at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph Drive, runs for four performances only: Saturday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, February 24 at 3 p.m., Wednesday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. Single tickets go on sale Monday, January 21.

Since 1984, the performing-arts series has championed new works and offered audiences unprecedented access to leading creators and performers. Each intimate, 80-minute performance uniquely combines artistic creation and stimulating conversation and takes place in the Guggenheim's Frank Lloyd Wright-designed, 285-seat Peter B. Opera San Jose continues its 29th season with Giuseppe Verdi's powerful drama, Il trovatore. Set in 15th-century Spain, Verdi's classic has it all: vengeance, war, jealousy, and passion, with an emotional, heart-stopping score. Il trovatore will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Eight performances are scheduled from February 9 through 24 at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in downtown San Jose. Il trovatore is made possible, in part, by a Cultural Affairs Grant from the City of San Jose. Il trovatore, with libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, is a mesmerizing story of romance, obsession, and retribution. Verdi mixes together personal vendetta, a doomed love triangle and one gypsy's lifelong obsession for revenge, creating a compelling and dramatic love story. Based on the play El Trovador (The Troubadour) by Spanish playwright Antonio Garcia Gutierrez, this powerful opera score features breathtakingly beautiful arias and one of the most famous choral melodies ever written, the "Anvil Chorus."

The Orion Ensemble, Chicago's nationally recognized and critically acclaimed chamber music ensemble, continues its 20th Anniversary Season with "A Night at the Opera,' featuring works by two well-known composers of opera along with a piano transcription of an opera excerpt. Performances take place tonight, November 25 at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church in Geneva, December 2 at Music Institute of Chicago's Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston and December 5 at the PianoForte Salon at the Fine Arts Building in Chicago. Roger Chase on viola and Stephen Boe on violin join Orion for this program.
