RENT, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning landmark rock opera from creator Jonathon Larson, makes its BlackfriarsTheatre premier in a radically reinterpreted and exciting production that is sure to be unforgettable. Being presented much closer to its initial concept off-off Broadway, the show will be staged in the round and will transform the Blackfriars thrust stage to a complete 360 degree circle with portions of the existing seating removed; making this production a must see event.

Maine State Music Theatre is thrilled to present a one night only concert starring Suzanne Nance and Friends on Monday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m. This intimate evening of song will showcase a variety of songs from opera including George Gershwin's, 'Summertime' from PORGY AND BESS; Leo Delibe's 'Lakme Duet (Flower Duet)' from LAKME; George Bizet's 'Au fond du temple saint' from THE PEARL FISHERS; Giacomo Puccini's 'O Soave Faciulla' from LA BOHEME; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 'La ci darem la mano' from DON GIOVANNI; and Gioacchino and Rossini's 'The Cat Duet.'

La rondine was commissioned by the Karltheater, Vienna in 1913, but its 1917 premiere was moved to neutral Monte Carlo after the outbreak of World War I. Although an initial success, La rondine was denounced as an 'enemy opera' by the French press and declined in popularity. Only recently has the opera been performed regularly in opera houses worldwide. Nicolas Joël's production draws on the glamour and glitter of 1920s France. In the chic surroundings of her Parisian salon, Magda celebrates passionate love in the memorable song 'Doretta's Dream' and in an Art Nouveau-inspired café, the lovers chat to a leisurely foxtrot. Giacomo Puccini's score is influenced by Viennese operetta and infused with popular dance rhythms, from two interwoven waltz themes in Act II to lively polkas and tangos. The final act moves to a hotel on the French Riviera where the lovers bid a heart-breaking farewell in soaring melodies, before Magda -- the 'swallow' of the title -- flies away.

The Canadian Opera Company has closed another successful opera season by recording an average attendance of 90% for 2012/2013. Both these one-act operas follow fascinating women who must grapple with despair as they meet their fate; but the two works, like the composers who created them, are extremely different. In Poulenc's sensual monodrama, a woman stumbles through a minefield of emotions as she attempts to stay connected to her ex-lover over the telephone. Puccini's mystical tragedy tells the story of a young nun who learns of the death of the son she was forced to abandon. She kills herself yet miraculously passes into a state of grace. Performances begin tonight, May 4 and run through May 18.

It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical among other awards. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008 after a 12-year run.
