THE COURT MARTIAL OF ALMIRANTE MONTOJO Comes to Manhattan Rep Theatre

A Spanish American War courtroom drama written by Filipino playwright Dennis Posadas will be performed off-off-Broadway on December 8. The Court Martial of Almirante Montojo historical courtroom drama takes off from US Admiral George Dewey's 1913 Scribner autobiography where he said he came to the courtroom defense of Spanish Contraalmirante Patricio Montojo after his victory in Manila Bay on 1 May 1898 one hundred and twenty years ago.

The beginning draft of the play The Court Martial of Almirante Montojo wrote itself deep within Filipino playwright Dennis Posadas's psyche one day as he was having a beer near Manila Bay several years ago. Since then his play, a historical courtroom drama about Spanish Contraalmirante Patricio Montojo's post Battle of Manila Bay trial in Madrid in 1899 after his loss to Admiral George Dewey at Manila Bay has been edited and rewritten so many times. 'I first pitched the story to a newly opened science museum in Manila several years ago but we did not come to an agreement. So the story slept for a while in my hard drive, Posadas said.

Dewey, who is still the only person in history to hold the rank of Admiral of the Navy, distinguished himself at the May 1, 1898 Battle of Manila Bay where he gave his famous order, 'You may fire when you are ready, Gridley.' He received New York City's first ticker tape parade which was attended by an estimated crowd of two million.
