Music Director Marin Alsop will lead the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in Mahler's Symphony No. 1, "Titan" and Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini on Thursday, April 24 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Sendai International Music Competition and 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition winner Yekwon Sunwoo joins the BSO to perform Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. "Titan" is also the subject of Maestra Alsop's final Off the Cuff concert of the 2013-2014 season, Friday, April 25 at 8:15 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore and Saturday, April 26 at 7 p.m. at the Meyerhoff.
The Cypress String Quartet will give the New York premiere of Grawemeyer Award-winning composer George Tsontakis' String Quartet No. 6 on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30pm as part of the new series "92Y Concerts at SubCulture," a co-presentation of 92Y and newly opened club SubCulture (downstairs at 45 Bleecker Street). The concert, which is the group's 92Y debut and their only NYC appearance of the season, also includes selections from Dvorak's set of twelve love songs for string quartet, Cypresses, from which the Quartet takes its name, as well as Schubert's seminal String Quartet No. 15 in G Major. The Cypress Quartet's recording of Dvorak's Cypresses was released as part of the quartet's debut album on AVIE in February 2013 (review copies available on request).
Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han have announced plans for The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's 45th anniversary season. The 2014-2015 Season offers an extraordinarily vibrant palette of diverse and innovative programming performed by a vast and impressive roster comprised of 109 of the world's finest chamber music artists. The season begins on October 15, 2014, and runs through May 15, 2015. Performances take place in Alice Tully Hall, the Rose Studio, and the Kaplan Penthouse.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the crown jewel of Ravinia's classical programming, kicks off its annual summer residency at the festival with a concert of American favorites at 5 p.m. on July 4.
