The World Premiere of Ruined at Goodman Theatre!
by Chicago News Desk - Nov 13, 2008

Set in the present-day DRC, Ruined is the captivating story of Mama Nadi (Ekulona), the owner of a canteen who serves up everything from a cold beer and a warm meal-to the company of a woman. Through the eyes of this savvy businesswoman who both protects and profits from the women whose bodies have become battlegrounds, Nottage captures the constantly shifting allegiances and tragic absurdity that marks the civil war in the DRC. Ruined, rendered with Nottage's trademark humanity, clarity and surprising humor, gives a glimpse of a country that has suffered immeasurable losses since the beginning of this war that has raged for more than a decade.

by Steve Leary - Nov 12, 2008

Goodman Theatre opens its "Strong Women, Strong Voices" Owen Theatre Series with the world premiere of Lynn Nottage's Ruined, directed by Kate Whoriskey and co-produced with Manhattan Theatre Club. Commissioned by the Goodman and first seen in the 2007 New Stages Series, Ruined was developed through Nottage and Whoriskey's pilgrimage to Uganda-where countless interviews and interactions resulted in a portrait of the lives of the women and girls caught in the devastating armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Leading the Goodman's cast in the role of Mama Nadi is Saidah Arrika Ekulona (Well on Broadway; Righteous Kill), who previously collaborated with Nottage and Whoriskey on the world premiere of Fabulation at Playwrights Horizons. Ruined begins performances on November 8 (opening night is November 17) and runs through December 7. Tickets are $10 - $39. Ruined begins performances at Manhattan Theatre Club on January 21, 2009.

Review: 'Todd' Tour Triumphant, Now and Forever
by Paul W. Thompson - Apr 26, 2008

The current national tour of the Stephen Sondheim/Hugh Wheeler musical 'Sweeney Todd' blew into the Windy City for a two-week engagement at the Cadillac Palace Theatre this week, revealing that the show is so strong as originally written that almost any style of storytelling will reveal its truths. If this fact doesn't mark the show as a true performing arts masterwork, then I don't know how anything else could. This show, and this metaphor-laden production of it, are miraculous in their revealing of the human condition.

A Spellbinding "Martin Guerre" at the Watermill
by Robert Gould - Jul 21, 2007

From the second that the new Watermill theatre production of 'Martin Guerre' begins through to its final chilling note, the audience is totally captivated in the atmosphere of a spine-tingling dramatic and musical world that represents all that is best in musical theatre. In the Watermill's intimate space - with the aid of Diego Pitarch's highly effective set, Richard G. Jones's evocative and atmospheric lighting and Sarah Travis's beautifully crafted orchestrations - a group of 12 talented actor-musicians under the masterful direction of Craig Revel Horwood succeed in not only telling a story that tears everyone's emotions apart but also in creating a musical sound that is quite beautiful throughout.

Aussie Bevis is new Martin Guerre
by Robert Gould - May 3, 2007

Australian-born actor/singer Andrew Bevis will play the title role of Martin Guerre in Craig Revel-Horwood's re-invention of the Boublil and Schonberg musical at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury from July 11 to September 1. Having begun his career as a musician and musical director, Bevis first gained attention down under as a musical theatre performer when he was cast in a revival of 'Hello Dolly', playing alongside Warren Mitchell and the grande dame of Australian musical theatre, Jill Perryman. In the West End he played star-crossed lover Romeo in the ill-fated Gerard Presgurvic/Don Black musical 'Romeo and Juliet', Marius in 'Les Miserables' and wowed audiences as the 'chick with a dick' in 'Jerry Springer, the Opera'.
