Five students from the Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA) have been selected to participate in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program, a week-long immersion in the life of an orchestral musician, June 9-16, 2018. The students, who are known as Zarin Mehta Fellows, will take lessons with Philharmonic musicians and train and play alongside the Orchestra, led by James Gaffigan, at the Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer. The students are Renchao Yu, violin; Kuan Liu, viola; Fangyu Huang, flute; Yanru Chiu, clarinet; and Sihong Zhao, bassoon. Auditions were held at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy in March 2018 by a panel of New York Philharmonic musicians.
Performing E. Séjourné's Concerto for Marimba and Strings, marimbist Ji Su Jung won the 43rd annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, which earned her a gold medal, a $25,000 prize and a solo performance at Jones Hall with the Houston Symphony at the Donor and Subscriber Appreciation Concert on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Associate Conductor Robert Franz.

The Houston Symphony and Houston Symphony League announced today the 10 semifinalists of the 43rd annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, one of the few nationwide competitions open to all standard orchestral instruments and piano. The semifinalists will compete for the $25,000 Grace Woodson Memorial Award, which includes the opportunity to perform with the Houston Symphony.
Concertmaster Frank Huang will lead the New York Philharmonic from his chair as Concertmaster in a program spotlighting the Orchestra's string section. 92nd Street Y inaugurates three engaging new series - Chamber Orchestras, a Vocal Series, and Garrick Ohlsson: Brahms Exploration - ushering in a host of original concepts, artists, compositions, and collaborations, in keeping with 92Y's enduring traditions of cultural discovery, intellectual curiosity, and artistic experimentation. Additionally, 92Y commences Inflection, its first interdisciplinary festival, a six-concert exploration of music in relation to other art forms, including spoken word, photography, sculpture, and dance. This season also features the World Premieres of Phyllis's Portrait by Sergio Assad and Jonathan Berger's new opera Leonardo, the US premiere of a symphony by Hans Rott, the New York premieres of Wynton Marsalis's new work for solo violin, a new string quartet by Martin Bresnick, and Andreia Pinto Correia's String Quartet No. 1 "Unvanquished Space"; five major international artists making their 92Y performance debuts: Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov, German cellist Alban Gerhardt, Bulgarian violinist Gergana Gergova, the Danish String Quartet, and the Artemis String Quartet; several young musicians also give their 92Y debut performances in the pristine acoustics of Buttenwieser Hall for the Soundspace Series: Jessica Xylina Osborne, Einav Yarden, Conrad Tao (with violinist Stefan Jackiw), the Horszowski Trio, Juho Pohjonen, and Orion Weiss.

Harold Hagopian, president of New York Stringed Instrument Company Inc., who is a Juilliard graduate and violinist, has partnered with the New York Philharmonic to create the Official New York Philharmonic Apprentice Violin, which the Orchestra has endorsed as a high-quality starter violin for children, as well as the Master Violin for more advanced students. The Sarasota Orchestra received a $10,000 grant from National Endowment for the Arts. The grant offers funding to area arts organizations in support of their artistic mission. The grant funds supported the 53rd Sarasota Music Festival (SMF or Festival). This three-week residency program brings together 60 exceptional young musicians and 40 renowned faculty artists for a series of coaching sessions, lectures, rehearsals and performances in Sarasota.
