40th Annual Dora Awards Nominations Announced: Soulpepper Takes Home 25 Nominations, DEAR EVAN HANSEN Taps 9 Noms

At a press conference held May 28 in the Davies Takacs Lobby of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) announced 282 nominations for the 40th Anniversary Dora Mavor Moore Awards, which recognize excellence in professional theatre, dance and opera in Toronto. On Tuesday, June 25 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, 49 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, the Silver Ticket Award and the Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award will be presented.

BWW Review: HAND TO GOD is a Disturbing, Complex, and Funny Look at Good Versus Evil…with Puppets

Dark comedy and puppets seem to be a natural link, given the number of film and theatre stories that have incorporated both in the last several years. Coal Mine Theatre's season-closing production of HAND TO GOD, written by Robert Askins, examines the duality of man and the struggle between good and evil through the eyes of a young teenager struggling with his emotions, family, and a particularly vocal and troublemaking hand puppet named Tyrone.

Canadian Stage Presents 36th Season Of Shakespeare In High Park

Canadian Stage has announced that Shakespeare in High Park will mark 36 seasons of staging open-air theatre in Toronto with adventurous contemporary adaptations of two of Shakespeare's most beloved plays: the tragic romance Romeo and Juliet and the frolicking comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream, running in repertory under the stars from June 28 to September 2 at the High Park Amphitheatre. A pay-what-you-can event, Shakespeare in High Park is Canada's longest-running outdoor theatre experience, and produced by Canadian Stage in collaboration with the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design at York University.

Jacoba Knaapen, Toronto Alliance or the Performing Arts (TAPA) Executive Director and Dora Mavor Moore Awards Producer, announced the VIP presenters today for the 38th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards, to be held on Monday, June 26 at the Elgin Theatre of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre.

Canadian Stage's Shakespeare in High Park Returns for 34th Season This Summer

Just in time for William Shakespeare's 400th anniversary, Canadian Stage's Shakespeare in High Park returns to the High Park Amphitheatre for a 34th season with two passionate Shakespearean classics: the great tragedy of Hamlet alongside the bold fairytale romance All's Well That Ends Well. Outdoors and under the stars, the plays run on alternating evenings from June 30 to September 4, Tuesday to Sunday at 8 pm. Each performance is pay-what-you can, with a suggested contribution of $20. The productions are presented by Canadian Stage in collaboration with the Department of Theatre, School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design at York University.

BWW Review: THE JUST is Compelling and Hauntingly Relevant

The world premiere of Bobby Theodore's translation of THE JUST by Albert Camus is now playing at Soulpepper. Directed by Frank Cox-O'Connell, this new adaptation of the 1949 French play set in Russia, follows the paths of five socialist revolutionaries plotting terror attacks against the Grand Duke of Russia in the early 1900s. The ensemble cast led by Raquel Duffy (Dora) and Peter Fernandes (Voinov) also features Katherine Gauthier, Diego Matamoros, Gregory Prest and Brendan Wall.

The Global Cabaret Festival Kicks Off Today

Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced details of the sixth annual Global Cabaret Festival. From today, October 24 to Sunday, October 27, the Young Centre for the Performing Arts once again becomes home to over 150 of Canada's leading performance artists staging over 15 original one-hour songbooks and cabarets.

Franco Boni Receives 2013 George Luscombe Award

The George Luscombe Award was inaugurated in 1999. Revolutionary theatre founder and artistic director George Luscombe founded Toronto Workshop Productions in 1959, marking the beginnings of Toronto's alternative theatre movement. He was Artistic Director for 27 years at TWP.
