The national tour of the Broadway musical "Million Dollar Quartet," inspired by the true story of a rock 'n roll jam session featuring Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, is coming to the Gallo Center for the Arts for five performances, Friday through Sunday, November 15 - 17.

On one fateful winter evening, a few weeks before Christmas in 1956, producer Sam Phillips managed to get all of his stars in one room. The recording session of Carl Perkins and Jerry Le Lewis soon turned into an impromptu jam session when Johnny Cash and breakout star Elvis Presley showed up too. This was to be the first and the last time all four men were in the same room together and goes down in history as one of the greatest spontaneous rock and roll collaborations of all time

It's true that on December 4, 1956, Sun Records was host to an incredible meeting of four gentleman (Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis) who would go on to lay the foundation for Rock 'n' Roll, but a listen to the actual recording made that day prove that it was a much simpler affair than what's presented in the stage musical MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. Still, the inspiration that story provides (book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux) makes for a rockin' good time, and this award-winning show is fun from start to finish.

Reaching hundreds of thousands of audience members annually, the theater season features a new Kennedy Center re-imagining of Henry Krieger and Bill Russell's Side Show, in association with La Jolla Playhouse with revisions by Krieger and Russell and direction by Academy Award winning director Bill Condon; touring productions of Sister Act, Elf, Flashdance – The Musical, Peter and the Starcatcher, An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin, and Disney's The Lion King; and an international theater festival highlighting renowned companies from around the world. A few weeks ago, after a sneak preview, I wrote that Million Dollar Quartet, 'based on its history and this 'sneak peek,' Million Dollar Quartet will be a major crowd-pleaser.' Well, it had its official opening at Harrahs in Las Vegas February 19 and, based on the performance and the crowd's reaction, it could run forever in Las Vegas.
