Julie Taymor to Receive 2015 William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre

The Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) has chosen Julie Taymor as the 2015 recipient of the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre (Will Award), which recognizes artists who have made significant contributions to classical theatre in America. JM Zell Partners, Ltd. will receive the Sidney Harman Award for Philanthropy in the Arts. The awards will be presented at the Harman Center for the Arts Annual Gala on Sunday, November 1, 2015, hosted by STC at Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW) and the National Building Museum (440 G Street NW).

Tony Winner Adriane Lenox to Lead Reading of Revamped THE TESTAMENT OF MARY

Tony Award winner Adriane Lenox (Doubt, Tony Award) will headline a starry industry reading of a re-conceptualization of The Testament of Mary on October 1st. Conceived and directed by Michael Rader (A Christmas Story, Cirque du Soleil, Stalking The Bogeymen), this new adaptation of Colm Toibin's The Testament of Mary will feature five different women sharing the title role of Mary, each representing how different cultures around the world view Mary. 

Cheltenham Literature Festival Announces Full Lineup, Including Matthew Bourne

For culture lovers, there's really only one place to be this autumn and that's The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival. Running from Friday till Sunday, October 2-11 the Festival boasts speakers as diverse as Ronnie Wood, Martha Lane Fox, Matthew Bourne, George the Poet, Garry Kasparov, Jeanette Winterson, Nick Clegg, Nigel Mansell, Carrie Hope Fletcher, Nick Frost, Nigella Lawson, Bill Bryson and Gino D'Acampo.

United Solo Special Award Nominees Announced

The world's largest solo theatre festival announced the nominees for the United Solo Special Award. Now in its sixth year, the Festival honors performers who have made outstanding contributions to solo theatre. Previous award winners include Anna Deavere Smith, Patti LuPone, John Leguizamo, Fiona Shaw, and Billy Crystal.

The panelists will include Greg Grandin, Morgan Jenness, and Michael Ratner.

United Solo Europe Returning to Poland

This is the third season of United Solo Europe at Teatr Syrena in Warsaw, Poland. The company, based at Theatre Row on 42nd Street in New York City, brings its top-notch solo shows overseas. In previous seasons United Solo Europe has hosted, among many distinguished artists, the two-time Laurence Olivier Award winner Fiona Shaw, and Regina Advento, a member of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. This Spring, the artistic director of United Solo in New York, Omar Sangare, in collaboration with the managing director of Teatr Syrena, Jakub Biegaj, and the artistic director of Teatr Syrena, Wojciech Malajkat, selected new shows and created another week-long theatre festival directed toward European audiences.

Winners of Inaugural ALSO RECOGNISED AWARDS Announced

The full list of winners are announced today in the inaugural Also Recognised Awards, the new audience-voted, industry accolade set up by theatre commentators Mark Shenton and Terri Paddock to celebrate lesser-known but equally worthy talent in fields overlooked by other awards bodies. Over a month's voting, more than 15,000 people took part.

Rattestick & piece by piece to Bring 'AFGHANISTAN, ZIMBABWE' to Gym at Judson

Rattlestick Playwrights Theater and piece by piece productions have announced that Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, America, Kuwait, written and directed by Daniel Talbott, will begin performances Thursday, May 21 at 7pm at The Gym at Judson, 243 Thompson Street. The opening night is set for Tuesday, June 9 at 7pm. The production is scheduled to run through Saturday, June 27.

BWW Reviews: LYSISTRATA at Connecticut Repertory Theatre

Outrageous, bawdy, and pointed: LYSISTRATA may be one of the oldest comedies we have (written in 411 B.C.E. by the great Greek troublemaker Aristophanes) but it remains both wickedly funny and pertinent. He wrote it 20 years into a bloody war that seemed endless. His premise? Have women conspire to withhold sex from their men until they can't take it any more and agree to a peace treaty.
