Orange County, Calif.—May 20, 2015—A grand, meaningful and operatic evening of music awaits, as Music Director Carl St.Clair leads Pacific Symphony's final concert of his 25th anniversary season, “Fire and Water,” a program representing the innovative and defining characteristics of the orchestra. Furthering St.Clair's commitment to new music, the evening includes the world premiere of “Siren Songs” by Laura Karpman, accompanied by video and animation by Tempe Hale, who has used footage from Gregory MacGillivray, Academy-Award nominated cinematographer of films such as “The Living Sea” and “Dolphins.” Karpman's piece explores women and the ocean and is based on a set of poems by internationally known poet, Amy Gerstler, who is also a professor at UC Irvine. For the fiery finale, St.Clair leads the orchestra in selections from Wagner's epic “Götterdämmerung,” (“Twilight of the Gods”), featuring Metropolitan Opera superstar, Deborah Voigt, who brings her beautiful and powerful voice to Brünnhilde's famous “Immolation Scene.”

We survived the eleventh season of GREY'S ANATOMY, and most of us remained relatively unscathed. This, of course, does not include the thousands of supporters of the insane “raise McDreamy from the dead” campaign. If it helps at all, I heard on the radio* this morning that Patrick Dempsey was fired for having an extramarital affair with a cast mate. He must've taken his character a little too seriously; much like many of the fans. Let him go. Full disclosure: I'm still not over T.R. Knight's departure. #Hypocrite.

Under the direction of Joel David Santner (who will shortly be moving to California for film school, a great loss to the DC area) the company has proven yet again that when viewed with fresh eyes, the early First Quarto version of 'Hamlet' is a limitless source of inspiration for artists and audiences alike. Although the company pulls its aesthetic punches by inviting a few guys to join the cast (including Marcus Kyd in the title role), the performance is of a dependable, high quality that makes this a rare, intimate view of the Bard's work.
Pittsburgh Opera concludes its 76th season with a colorful, charming production of Donizetti's comic opera DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT (La fille du régiment). On stage tonight, May 2, 5, 8, and 10, and sung in English, DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT brings a bit of whimsy and plenty of vocal fireworks to the Benedum Center.

VALLEY UPRISING explores the counter-culture sport of rock climbing through the stories of those who were there from the very beginning to now, as rock climbing has evolved from its origins in the free-wheeling '60s culture of sex, drugs, and rock and roll to a modern sport that, while retaining its wild spirit, features some of our nation's best athletes.
