CityKids Foundation Honors Black History Month With THE ARTIVIST

The East Village Playhouse, home of the CityKids Foundation, honors Black History Month with a production of "The Artivist, The Bayard Rustin Story," a solo show that tells the story of the life of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin through his speeches, songs, monologues, documentary footage, and letters. The play opens January 24th and runs through February 17th, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 3pm.

Theater for the New City Presents BETTY & THE BELRAYS

'Bring it On' meets 'Dreamgirls' in the girl-group musical, 'Betty and the Belrays' by William Electric Black aka Ian Ellis James, which will be presented by Theater for the New City January 31 to February 17. The piece tells the story of three white female singers from Detroit who struggle to change a racially divided society by singing for a black record label. Book and lyrics are by William Electric Black. Music is by Black, Valerie Ghent (arranger/keyboards for Ashford & Simpson) and Gary Schreiner. Choreography is by Jeremy Lardieri. Director is Mr. Black.

Neo-soul Quintet Shookrah Shares Visuals For 'Flex'

Ireland-based five-piece Shookrah has shared their brand new single 'Flex' on 30th November via Broken Records, as well as a new accompanying music video. This single release follows on from their track 'Don't Wanna Doubt You', shared in May this year, and continues the trajectory of a highly successful year of writing and recording for Shookrah. The five-piece has already sparked international interest from a host of tastemaker publications, including Afropunk, CLASH Mag, Wonderland Magazine, JOE.ie, Irish Examiner, GoldenPlec and The Irish Times and have also enjoyed radio play on shows such as BBC Ulster's Across The Line. The Irish Times crowned Shookrah, 'Best Irish Act of 2017' and '50 People to Watch in 2018' while GoldenPlec named them one of their Plec Picks for 2016. The band has also been dominating the live music scene, playing headlining shows at Quarter Block Party, Wigwam and K-Fest as well as supporting music legends Billy Ocean and Theo Katzman (Vulfpeck) on their Irish tours.

Field Day Unveils a New UK Festival Location for 2019

Field Day 2019 will mark an evolution of gigantic proportions as it moves to a ground-breaking new location in Meridian Water, North London. Situated next to Tottenham Marshes at an old gas works, the new site is made up of an enormous ten-acre outdoor space with four giant, interlinked warehouses, the largest of which will be the biggest warehouse venue for music in the city (7,500 cap). The move will allow Field Day to go later than any other festival in London and present its biggest line-up to date. Sign up for exclusive access to tickets. Black Broadway Creates A Music & Mental Health Album

Singers from the Black Broadway community have joined together to create a music and mental health album of inspirational cover songs. In just two rehearsals, the Darkness RISING cast recorded an album intended for anyone who lives with anxiety, depression, bipolar, or other mental illnesses. Music has been proven be therapeutic and healing. It can provide emotional support, increase motivation, and offer an outlet for expression of feelings.

Bri Steves has released her latest track, “Regrets,” along with companion video, which premiered earlier today via YouTube. “Regrets” comes just a few weeks after Bri released her video for “Miami,” which was the prequel to September's “Late Night” detailing an elaborate bank heist. Bri Steves is showing no signs of slowing down as “Regrets” marks her fourth release within 3 months, following “Miami,” “Late Night,” and “Ain't Shit.”

wild Up / of Ascension Celebrates the Legendary Album by Jazz Great John Coltrane

LA-based music collective, wild Up, returns to the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts with of Ascension, the first Jazz Club performances for the 2018/19 season on November 8 & 10, 2018.  of Ascension, co-commissioned by The Soraya, is a musical journey inspired by John Coltrane's legendary 1966 album, Ascension.

Brazilian Legend Sergio Mendes Joined By Ana Tijoux At The Soraya

Sergio Mendes, “the man who put go-go boots on Brazilian music and brought it to the world,” (Billboard) will make a rare Los Angeles appearance when he brings his vivacious bossa nova to The Soraya on Saturday evening, October 27 at 8:00pm.  A giant in his genre, Mendes has recorded more than 35 albums over a nearly six-decade career thus far.  Joining him to open the evening will be French-Chilean singer Ana Tijoux who debuts her new project, Roja y Negro, new album of acoustic guitar celebrating Latin American folk music.  With Mendes and Tijoux on stage, two generations of Latin American artists will share their passion both for traditional and popular music.

Kandace Springs Releases New Video For 'Breakdown' - Fall Tour Starts This Month

Singer and pianist Kandace Springs has released her remarkable second album Indigo (Blue Note), a 13-track LP of originals and choice covers that showcases the full breadth of Kandace's artistry from smoldering R&B ('People Make the World Go 'Round' '6 8') to gorgeous jazz ballads ('Unsophisticated' featuring Roy Hargrove) to the pop songcraft of 'Breakdown' and 'Don't Need The Real Thing.' All but two tracks are produced by drummer/producer Karriem Riggins (Common, Erykah Badu) with additional production by Jamie Hartman (Rag'n'Bone Man), Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae), Jimmy Harry (Madonna, P!nk), and Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken (Rihanna).
