Carbonell Award Nominations Announced

A musical about a war-time romance and a controversial play that took audiences to the depths of humanity top the list of nominees for the 35th annual Carbonell Awards, celebrating the best shows and performances in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The Carbonell Awards recognize Florida's best stage productions and those behind them. This year, the awards' 35th, the Actors' Playhouse production of MISS SAIGON leads the pack with 11 nominations, followed by 7 nominations for the controversial play BLASTED, the Miami Herald reports.

34th Annual Carbonell Award Nominations Announced

Les Miserables at Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables led the pack with a dozen nominations. Broadsword at Miami's Mad Cat Theatre Company and Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them at Plantation's Mosaic Theatre tied with five nods each as the most recognized plays for the annual honors to be held on Monday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

Southeastern Premiere - 'Adding Machine' A New Musical

This Award-Winning play, with music by Joshua Schmidt and a libretto by Jason Loewith and Joshua Schmidt, is adapted from The Adding Machine, written in 1923 by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Elmer Rice. Generally considered to be the first American Expressionist play, it is the story of a man who, after 25 years of service to his company, is replaced by a mechanical adding machine.

Free 'Macbeth' At Lou Rawls Arts Center

This one-hour version has toured Miami-Dade County High Schools and Middle Schools for the past several weeks. It is adapted and directed by Mad Cat Theatre Company Artistic Director Paul Tei and features three of South Florida's leading actors-- Erik Fabregat, Deborah Sherman and Margie Eisenberg. The performance, generously sponsored by The Children's Trust, will be followed by a discussion with the cast.
