A musical about a war-time romance and a controversial play that took audiences to the depths of humanity top the list of nominees for the 35th annual Carbonell Awards, celebrating the best shows and performances in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The Carbonell Awards recognize Florida's best stage productions and those behind them. This year, the awards' 35th, the Actors' Playhouse production of MISS SAIGON leads the pack with 11 nominations, followed by 7 nominations for the controversial play BLASTED, the Miami Herald reports.

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Mad Cat Theatre Company join forces for the first time to present BROADSWORD, the raucous and rollicking play that combines myth, magic, and heavy metal on stage April 29 - May 9, 2010 at the Carnival Studio Theater in the Ziff Ballet Opera House. Broadsword at Miami's Mad Cat Theatre Company and Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them at Plantation's Mosaic Theatre tied with five nods each as the most recognized plays for the annual honors to be held on Monday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

2009 could go down as the year of the musical with seven of the top 10 nominated shows edging out the edgier dramas for the 34th annual Carbonell Awards nominations celebrating the best shows and performances in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

This Award-Winning play, with music by Joshua Schmidt and a libretto by Jason Loewith and Joshua Schmidt, is adapted from The Adding Machine, written in 1923 by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Elmer Rice. Generally considered to be the first American Expressionist play, it is the story of a man who, after 25 years of service to his company, is replaced by a mechanical adding machine.

This one-hour version has toured Miami-Dade County High Schools and Middle Schools for the past several weeks. It is adapted and directed by Mad Cat Theatre Company Artistic Director Paul Tei and features three of South Florida's leading actors-- Erik Fabregat, Deborah Sherman and Margie Eisenberg. The performance, generously sponsored by The Children's Trust, will be followed by a discussion with the cast.

This year's red carpet season got off to a shaky start as a strike derailed the glamour in Los Angeles and New York. South Florida shows the nation how to get it right as the 32nd Annual Carbonell Award nominations were released today along with details of the awards ceremony, which is one of the most anticipated events of the theatrical season. The Carbonell Awards, sponsored by The Law Firm of Broad & Cassel, P.A., will take place Monday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
