GableStage at the Biltmore Hotel is proud to present the South Florida Premiere of The Lieutenant Of Inishmore, opening on August 11th and running through September 9th. This Broadway and London smash hit is by Martin McDonagh, whose acclaimed play The Pillowman was produced by GableStage last season, winning four Carbonell Awards (Best Play, Director, Actor, Sound Design).

The piece is a stunningly funny tale about a ruthless Irish Liberation Army enforcer and the one thing he loves more than anything else in the world…his little black cat, Wee Thomas. It is a wildly bloody Tarantino-esque black comedy that takes an axe (and several guns) to the hypocrisy of violence in society. The London Times called it "bitterly blood curdling and breathtakingly funny!"—and the New York Times heralded it as "the funniest show in town! A guaranteed adrenaline booster! See it!"

Although McDonagh became the first playwright since Shakespeare to have four plays running simultaneously in London's West End, it still took him five years to get The Lieutenant of Inishmore staged when all the major theatres in London passed on it. Even Artistic Director Trevor Nunn refused to produce it at the National, on the grounds that it might disrupt the Northern Ireland peace process. When it was finally mounted by the Royal Shakespeare Company, it went on to win the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy (2003). It opened in New York at the Atlantic Theatre off-Broadway in 2006, winning an Obie for Best Play. From there, it transferred to the Lyceum on Broadway, where it was nominated for a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for Best Play.

Lieutenant of Inishmore is directed by GableStage Producing Artistic Director Joseph Adler. It features eight of the best and busiest actors in South Florida: Stephen G. Anthony, Ken Clement, Todd Allen Durkin, Erik Fabregat, Scott Genn, Daniel Gomez, Paul Homza and Kim Morgan.
