This year marked the most successful NATIONAL OPERA WEEK yet, smashing previous participation records. From Friday, October 24 through Sunday, November 2, 2014, 205 opera companies, schools and organizations across North America presented performances, activities, contests and announcements in 37 states to celebrate opera.

Soprano Nicole Cabell and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato star as the ill-fated lovers Giulietta and Romeo in Vincenzo Bellini's bel canto opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues) in San Francisco Opera's new video release in partnership with EuroArts Music International. Cabell and DiDonato are joined by Albanian tenor Samir Pirgu (Tebaldo), American bass-baritone Eric Owens (Capellio) and Chinese baritone Ao Li (Lorenzo).

Over 160 opera companies, schools and organizations across North America will celebrate the sixth annual NATIONAL OPERA WEEK from today, October 24 through Sunday, November 2, 2014, with opera activities and announcements in their communities. National Opera Week is coordinated by OPERA America, the national service organization for opera.

George and Ira Gershwin's masterpiece opera Porgy and Bess, based on the play by Dubose and Dorothy Heyward, premieres on PBS this fall with the critically acclaimed production from San Francisco Opera. THE GERSHWINS'® PORGY AND BESS airs tonight, October 17, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings) as part of the PBS Arts Fall Festival, which highlights artists and performances from around the country and invites every American to have a front-row seat and a backstage pass for the country's best arts performances.

Susan Graham scored a fresh triumph this summer at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, where, as Anna in a new production of The King and I, she made her first foray into musical theater since her student days. Now the Grammy Award-wining mezzo returns to the concert hall, launching the 2014-15 season under Edo de Waart in her Malaysian Philharmonic debut, and joining a trio of top orchestras -- the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, and John Eliot Gardiner's Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique -- for her signature Berlioz. Long recognized as one of the world's foremost exponents of French music, Graham returns with Berlioz to the San Francisco Opera, revisiting her star turn as Didon in an original staging of Les Troyens, while for her return to the Metropolitan Opera she sings the title role in Susan Stroman's new take on The Merry Widow. Ever “an artist to treasure” (New York Times), Graham looks forward to headlining gala concerts at Los Angeles Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago, where she joins Jane Lynch, Renée Fleming, Ramsey Lewis, and other celebrities to honor the company's 60th anniversary, and rounds out the season in company with her regular recital partner, pianist Malcolm Martineau, for a west coast tour and a season-closing appearance in Classical Action's Michael Palm Series.
