To open its 34th season, Undermain Theatre presents the World Premiere of so go the ghosts of mexico, part 2, Matthew Paul Olmos's second play in an epic trilogy of different stories examining the US/Mexico drug wars.

PROTOTYPE: Opera/Theatre/Now invigorates New York City January 7-20, 2018, with the sixth annual showcase of progressive opera and music-theatre, curated by co-founding directors Kristin Marting (of HERE), Beth Morrison (of Beth Morrison Projects) and Kim Whitener (of HERE), along with newly appointed co-director Jecca Barry (of Beth Morrison Projects). Since its launch in 2013, the Prototype Festival has presented a phenomenal 32 new works across five seasons, propelling the industry forward as a first-rate presenter and influencer.

Spiderwoman Theater, beloved stalwart of New York's downtown theatre scene, will celebrate 40 years of remarkable performances with a gala celebration at the landmark East Village venue La MaMa on Tuesday, September 19.

On Saturday, June 10, historian and best-selling author Timothy Snyder will attend the opening of Yara Arts Group's new theatre piece with poetry, '1917-2017: Tychyna, Zhadan & the Dogs' at La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theatre, 66 E. 4th Street.  The performance is introduced by a live installation featuring New York poet Bob Holman performing his own poems inspired by Mr. Snyder's book, 'On Tyranny: 20 Lessons from the 20th Century,' which is now a NY Times Best Seller.

Experimental theatre artist Amy Rox Surratt, and a supporting ensemble, create fictionally famous reality TV child star 'Amy Surratt.' At home, things have been heading South for a while. Now, 'Amy' investigates her genuine Appalachian roots and struggles to come back to something she never really had - taking the audience to hell in a hand basket with her. The result is a surreal Appalachian love letter to historical and personal traumas.

Undermain Theatre's 34th season examines the world from a largely female perspective with three mainstage productions and adds a 4 week reading series of new American work in the spring. Our world premiere and season opener examines the world of Mexican cartels as portrayed by an all-female cast, by an evolving young writer. Our fall production is a regional premiere of an established Pulitzer-prize winning playwright, which takes place in an American setting inhabited and driven by three different generations of women in an eerie atmosphere near a Civil War battleground.

dell'Arte Opera Ensemble presents its 2017 UNTAMED! Opera Festival from August 12-27, 2017, as a summer share in downtown New York City's La MaMa Theatre. Spotlighting the unpredictable, wild characters of opera, this year's Festival explores parallels between human, animal and supernatural realms.

This year, Grusomhetens Teater ('The Theater of Cruelty') celebrates 25 years of activity. Most recently, this independent physical theater company premiered its 26th evening-length production, 'I is another' - Rimbaud in Africa, written & directed by company artistic director Lars Øyno, on 26 January.

One of the city's oldest, continuously operating theater companies, La MaMa, celebrated the conclusion of its 55th season, and announced the $15 million renovation of its New York City landmark building at 74 East 4th Street in Manhattan with "Dancing in The Street", a BLOCK PARTY on Saturday, May 20th from 11AM to 4PM. On Friday, June 9th, 2017, 5-7pm — a Special Book Event for “CREATE! How Extraordinary People Live To Create and Create To Live” — a new book by best-selling author, Ronald Rand — will be held at The Drama Book Shop, 250 West 40 Street in New York City. 

From June 9 to 25, La MaMa and Yara Arts Group will present '1917-2017 Tychyna, Zhadan & the Dogs,' a new theatre piece with poetry which examines what individuals do when a society crumbles.
