BWW Review: MR. BURNS Brings Fiction to Reality in a Bright New Light at Cape Rep
by Kristen Morale - Sep 21, 2015

Written by Anne Washburn (who is also the show's lyricist) with a score by Michael Friedman and hereby directed by Philip Hays, Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play makes its appearance on Cape Cod following a successful run at Playwrights' Horizons in New York, and can now begin surprising audiences all over again with its current run. Taking a first glance at the show's poster, one can get a vague idea of what this show is actually about. There are people huddled around what looks like a campfire, their seated forms casting shadows that resemble what appear to be characters from the widely popular cartoon, The Simpsons; only then is the connection made between what Washburn's show might be about and the use of Mr. Burns' name as the titular focus. It seems odd to base an entire show on The Simpsons, but what is even more mind-boggling is how only the workings of a playwright's mind can turn the characters and themes of a cartoon into something more profound and fascinating enough for an audience to simply get.

BWW Reviews: The Catastrophic Theatre's CLEAN/THROUGH is Hauntingly Poignant
by David Clarke - Feb 10, 2014

Miki Johnson took Houston audiences by storm when The Catastrophic Theatre premiered her first play AMERICAN FALLS. Now, The Catastrophic Theatre and Miki Johnson are back at it with the riveting and gut wrenching world premiere of her tautly constructed new drama CLEAN/THROUGH. The 60-minute one-act play is a deeply traumatizing experience that leaves audiences profoundly devastated and hopeful all at the same time.

BWW Reviews: Tamarie Cooper's OLD AS HELL! is Jocular, Vivacious, and Heartfelt
by David Clarke - Jul 13, 2013

Tamarie Cooper's OLD AS HELL is meh. NOT! In fact, this year's offering in the cherished tradition of Houston theatre's summer line-up sparkles with clever wit and ebullient hilarity. This may only be my second summer to see a Tamarie Cooper musical, but in so many ways I found this one better than last year's raucously irreverent DOOMSDAY REVUE. Maybe with one Tamarie Cooper show under my belt, I had a better idea of what to expect. Maybe like a good wine Tamarie Cooper is only getting better with age. Or maybe it's both. Regardless, I sincerely wish I had been there to see them all.

Stark Naked Theatre Company's production of William Shakespeare's MACBETH has been on everybody's lips for weeks, even months, now. As soon as the show was announced a gentle hum of excitement began, and turned into a blistering roar by last night's opening night performance. Co-Executive Directors Philip Lehl and Kim Tobin set the bar high for intimate, independent theatre and consistently surpass audiences' expectations with their astounding productions. Their MACBETH is no different as it splendidly thrilled and delighted last night's eager audience with ease.

BWW Reviews: LOVE GOES TO PRESS is Fun, Witty, & Intelligent
by David Clarke - Nov 26, 2012

Main Street Theater is offering Houstonians an unparalleled delight with their production of Martha Gellhorn and Virginia Cowles' play LOVE GOES TO PRESS. The play found success in London in 1946 and then moved across the pond to New York in 1947. It opened January 1 and closed on January 4. The play was not touched again in the United States until earlier in 2012 when the Mint Theater revived it. With a strong and talented cast and crew, Main Street Theater is presenting the Regional Premiere of the mad cap, romantic, and charmingly feminist comedy, running now through December 23, 2012.

BWW Reviews: DOOMSDAY REVUE - The Greatest Apocalypse Ever!
by David Clarke - Jul 14, 2012

Tamarie Cooper's magnificent production of her fifteenth annual original piece, DOOMSDAY REVUE (the greatest musical ever!), proves that Houston has a wealth of artistic talent. Moreover, The Catastrophic Theatre in coordination with Tamarie Cooper is stacked with innumerable bankrolls of local talent.
