Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! The Brigham Young University Department of Theatre and Media Arts explores a variety of styles, genres and stories in a dynamic new season of gripping dramas, classic comedies, theatre for young audiences and a beloved, high-flying musical for all to enjoy.
The longest running musical in the world The Fantasticks is always at its best when produced and performed with simplicity. When I first saw it in New York in the 60s, it was performed in a cabaret space against a brick wall, with the suspension of a paper moon above. You can't get much simpler than that. In the current revival at the Pasadena Playhouse, the setting is bigger: a dilapidated, war-torn theatre in Southern California, shuttered since 1969, into which the actors enter to create art. The space may be bigger than the original, but the fine work on display maintains simplicity, especially in its message of love. This is a stunning production, one of the very best I have seen, with a magnificent interracial cast under the seamless direction of Seema Sueko.

Arriving on the Monomoy stage under the direction of Alan Rust, The Fantasticks is the first production of this show I have seen, and I believe it to be the most utterly captivating production that has been on this theater's - rather any I have seen this summer - stage in quite some time. This is not only because of the rather basic but wonderful plot of a boy falling in love with a girl, being torn apart by no obstacles but themselves and then brought back together through what seems like an almost realized fate. It is not just because of the beautiful music provided by a very talented pianist and harpist - music which accompanies this story that teeters between our reality and fiction.
The Orchestre symphonique de Montreal is proud to announce that its complete recorded performance of L'Aiglon has won the ECHO Klassik, Germany's most esteemed classical music award, in the category "Opera recording (20th/21st century music)."
