Theatre Communications Group (TCG) is pleased to announce the publication of Dear Evan Hansen, with a book by Steven Levenson and music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Dear Evan Hansen premiered at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. the summer of 2015, with a subsequent Off Broadway run at Second Stage the spring of 2016 and transfer to Broadway in the fall of the same year where it's currently running. The original musical earned nine Tony Award nominations this season.
Controversy erupted last week over the casting of a black actor in a Portland, Oregon, production of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Shoebox Theatre director Michael Streeter was asked by the Albee estate to re-cast the role with a white actor. He refused, and the estate pulled the rights. The Dramatists Guild is aware of the recent casting controversy and has just released the following statement.
