BWW Review: Carmen Cusack Returns to Feinstein's/54 Below with a New Show Demonstrating Her Songwriting Prowess
by Casey Mink
- Mar 15, 2017
One generally associates megaphones as the staple of high school gym teachers, used to amplify their punitive requests of portly students to run faster. Naturally, Carmen Cusack, the once-unsung supernova who made her craterous impact on Broadway in last season's BRIGHT STAR, subverted preconceived notions. Slowly making her way to the stage, Cusack began her show crooning into the piece of machinery.
If the very first notes of your concert will be heard projected via megaphone, well, you'd be wise to make certain you sound exceptional. That, of course, is a non-issue for Cusack. Following a sold-out engagement at Feinstein's/54 Below last summer, the Tony (and now Grammy) nominee returned to the venue for another four-show run on March 8, and was in her usual sublime voice.
BWW Review: Carmen Cusack Shares Her Remarkable Story with Feinstein's/54 Below, Showcasing the Unmatched Versatility Which Brought Her to Broadway
by Casey Mink
- Aug 12, 2016
'At last, at last, at long last.'
These are the lyrics which ushered in the emotional climax of Broadway's Bright Star, the North Carolina-set musical which burned fast and, well, bright this past season on Broadway. So, too, did these lyrics close out the solo concert debut of the musical's incandescent star, Carmen Cusack, at Feinstein's/54 Below on August 9.
Fittingly so. This time last year, Cusack was little known in New York, having established herself as a bona fide star in the West End, as well as regionally in touring productions of Wicked and South Pacific. Cut to the summer of 2016, though, and Cusack has made one of the most celebrated Broadway debuts in memory and was Tony-nominated in this year's Actress in a Leading Role category (the same one deemed too full for Audra McDonald). It is no wonder, then, Cusack wasted no time capitalizing on her newfound cachet, booking three concerts at Broadway's supper club, before swiftly adding a fourth due to demand.
