David Watson's SAVE TO DRAFT begins its first run today, January 29, and plays through February 21, 2016. And while it may be true that there are no new plots in the theatrical arena, there are, indeed, fascinating ways of looking at them. Watson's ear for dialogue and insight into the human condition makes SAVE THE DRAFT the must-see show of the New Year.
Syracuse Stage's 15/16 Season starts October 21 with The Underpants, a guffaw inducing comedy from the wild and crazy mind of the incomparable Steve Martin. In Dusseldorf, 1910, a very public wardrobe malfunction (a young woman's underpants fall down at a parade-for the King!) becomes the talk of the town in this ribald update of an uproarious German farce. (Yes, there is such a thing.) Chock-full of sexual innuendo, verbal jousting, and non-stop laughter, The Underpants skewers the absurdity of instant fame. Bill Fennelly (Hairspray, A Midsummer Night's Dream) returns to direct.
Studio Theatre will inaugurate its Studio X series with Animal, a new play by British playwright Clare Lizzimore, commissioned for Studio's stage. "Clare is a director turned playwright whom I commissioned after reading her first play," says Artistic Director David Muse. "She has a tremendous theatrical imagination paired with an understanding of the subtle skill of actors to animate characters. Animal is an intimate and character-driven domestic drama, full of twists and humor. I've known GT Upchurch for years, and she has the craft and imagination to realize Clare's work in all its complexity and beauty."
