In the annals of the Wagner family, the name Houston Stewart Chamberlain is but a footnote. Yet, argues Avner Dorman's new opera Wahnfried, he was in some ways the link between Richard Wagner and Adolf Hitler. Chamberlain was a failing English scientist who became obsessed with Wagner's music, after the composer's death marrying Wagner's daughter Eva and moving to Bayreuth. There he stayed close to his adopted family and, eventually, to Adolf Hitler, whom he hugely admired. Hitler for his part saw Chamberlain as a mentor and was highly influenced by his magnum opus, The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century - which codified Aryan supremacy and systemic anti-Semitism. Hitler so admired the older man that he often quoted him, and made the journey to Bayreuth for his funeral.

An independent report has found that the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) Fellowship program is addressing an unmet need in the Australian orchestral sector and that 86 per cent of alumni since the program started in 2001 are working in symphony orchestras around Australia and internationally.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with award-winning designer Jonathan Howard from Hatmaker and Swarovski to create a special Christmas gift to raise money for music education this holiday season.

Calgary-based Honens today announced details of its 2018 Piano Competition.  Pianists of all nationalities, aged 20 to 30 on August 30, 2018, with the exception of past Honens Laureates and professionally managed artists, may apply starting February 1, 2017.  The application deadline is October 31, 2017.  The Competition's Quarterfinals take place in Berlin and New York in March 2018.  Semifinals and Finals take place in Calgary from August 30 to September 8, 2018.

Join the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) for a special "family" concert on Saturday, November 12 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The HSO revives a long tradition of presenting concerts for children and families with this event. The "Ohana Concert" will be the first for the HSO which is celebrating its fifth season in 2016-17. The title piece, Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" has long introduced young children to the orchestra and been a hallmark of youth concerts for decades.

For the 2016-2017 season, Carnegie Hall has appointed Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steve Reich to hold the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair.

In a magnificent finale to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra's 2016 season, Chief Conductor David Robertson will reveal his latest Opera in the Concert Hall presentation - arguably the greatest American opera of all time: The Gershwins®' Porgy and Bess ® by George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin. 

WQXR's online new-music station Q2 Music will broadcast the 2016 NJSO Edward T. Cone Composition Institute concert, "Scores: New Orchestral Works," on Tuesday, October 18, at 9 pm. The program-a live NJSO performance under the baton of David Robertson, recorded on July 16 at the Richardson Auditorium in Princeton-features new works by the four composers of the 2016 NJSO Edward T. Cone Composition Institute, as well as a work from Institute Director Steven Mackey.The broadcast, which will include interviews with the Institute composers, will become available for on-demand listening in the archives at www.q2music.org.

Carnegie Hall presents Orchestra of St. Luke's in three concerts this season in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, beginning on Thursday, October 13 at 8:00 p.m. The series kicks off with the orchestra's long-time friend and collaborator David Robertson leading a program that includes Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92; and selections from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn featuring celebrated baritone Thomas Hampson. Also on the program is Brett Dean's Testament, a moving tribute to Beethoven's life and music inspired by his 1802 "Heiligenstadt Testament," the autobiographical manifesto in which the composer came to terms with the loss of his hearing early in his career.

Esteemed conductor Sir Simon Rattle concludes his two-season Perspectives series at Carnegie Hall this fall, leading four concerts with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Ensemble Connect, and the Berliner Philharmoniker. Maestro Rattle launched his Perspectives series last November, leading the Berliner Philharmoniker in a Beethoven symphony cycle over five consecutive days.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will honour the significant contribution of Concertmaster Dene Olding by naming him Concertmaster Emeritus after his final concerts with the Orchestra in October. Mr Olding recently announced his decision to step down after 23 years as Concertmaster of the SSO and will take his final bow with the orchestra in Beethoven's Symphony No.9 on 29 October at the Sydney Opera House.
