As part of its 2015-2016 season announcement, Carnegie Hall today shared that singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash will curate a four-concert Perspectives series at the Hall beginning in October 2015.
As the title may suggest to some, this work is an assemblage of two prior works: the photograph Self-Portrait as a Drowned Man (1840) by Hippolyte Bayard, and 'The Willows' (1907), a short story by Algernon Blackwood. In this story (considered by HP Lovecraft the greatest supernatural story ever written) a man is found drowned and marked with small funnel-shaped indentations — 'That awful mark!' — made by an unknown supernatural being; the title of Bayard's photograph (considered by some the first conceptual art photograph) suggested the identity of the unfortunate victim.
Due to predicted extreme weather conditions and travel disruptions, the New York Philharmonic has had to cancel two rehearsals for the program of Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 30 at 11:00 a.m.; and Saturday, January 31 at 8:00 p.m., to be conducted by David Robertson. This has necessitated some changes in repertoire. Also due to the changes in rehearsal schedule, the Open Rehearsal scheduled for Wednesday, January 28 at 9:45 a.m. has been cancelled.

Backlight, which plays sonically with the idea of shadow and light and was commissioned by Carnegie Hall for Ensemble ACJW, receives its world premiere by the group in the Arthur Zankel Music Center, Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall in Saratoga Springs, New York, on Friday, February 13 at 8:00 p.m., as part of a week-long residency at Skidmore College. Both concerts also include Roussel's Trio for Flute, Viola, and Cello, and Ravel's Piano Trio in A Minor.
