This Friday, “20/20” will report on a nationwide investigation that found at least 50 murders allegedly committed since 2012 by people who at the time were under orders to wear electronically monitored ankle bracelets. In some cases, authorities failed to appropriately monitor people wearing ankle bracelets or to respond to alerts set off by the electronic devices. The program features interviews with Rafael Zaldivar, the father of a young man who was killed in Orange County, Florida, by someone wearing a device; and Bill Cregg, who was the first to arrive on the scene of a murder in Syracuse, New York, by a man who had removed his device. Suicide or homicide? That question still lingers for Michelle O'Connell's family and friends nearly eight years after she was shot inside her boyfriend's St. Augustine, Florida, home and died. Her family alleges she was killed by her boyfriend, Deputy Sheriff Jeremy Banks, but the sheriff's department maintains that she committed suicide. At the request of Michelle's family, her body was exhumed and an outside forensics expert conducted a second autopsy for them which concluded that Michelle's death was a homicide. However, authorities still maintain she took her own life. When 19-year-old college student Mark Fisher was murdered in an alleged gang-crime, the public outcry was deafening. John Giuca and Antonio Russo were both convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for Mark's murder. In February, John's conviction was overturned by an appeals court which said the prosecutor made errors that could have impacted the jury's decision and two weeks ago Antonio confessed to detectives that he shot and killed Mark but did not implicate John. As John remains behind bars, awaiting an appeal by prosecutors of the recent ruling and a possible retrial, ABC News' Juju Chang sits down with Doreen Quinn Giuliano, John's mother, who has worked to try to prove her son's innocence for years. What caused a doctor and veterinarian couple to hire a hit man to kill their exes? today night, “20/20” investigates this double murder-for-hire plot and the elaborate sting operation authorities say they set up to catch Houston-area veterinarian, Valerie McDaniel, and her boyfriend, Leon Jacob, before it was too late. Just last week, Leon was convicted and sentenced to life for two counts of solicitation of capital murder. “20/20” features footage from the trial and sentencing hearing, including Leon's testimony and impact statements from Leon's targeted ex-girlfriend and allegedly abused ex-wife. After a dinner out, the Whitaker family was ambushed upon returning to its Sugar Land, Texas, home in what authorities initially thought was a burglary gone wrong. All four members were shot - killing mother, Tricia, and younger son, Kevin, and wounding father, Kent, and elder son, Bart. The case took a twisted turn when Bart turned out to be the mastermind behind the murder-for-hire plot intended to kill his entire family and injure him as part of the cover-up. Bart has since been convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death.
