The iconic holiday classic movie, Miracle on 34th Street, first brought joy into the hearts of millions in the summer of 1947. Although it was and is most definitely a Christmas movie, the original producers chose to release it in May because more people went to the movies in the summer. The fact that it was a Christmas movie was not even included in the marketing campaign. It was kept a secret! Hard to imagine that now, as it has become a holiday tradition for generations.
Lion and tigers and bears, oh my! Main Street in Arlington is now paved with yellow bricks as kids and adults alike are following it to enjoy Theatre Arlington's production of The Magical City of Oz. This fun and whimsical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, based on L. Frank Baum's book, was first written and staged by Steven D. Morris and Don Powers in 1984. At that time Morris was the theater's first Children's Theatre Director and was frustrated by the lack of entertaining scripts for children, so he set out to create his own with his friend, Don Powers, who composed all the new music. This charming retelling has all of the familiar, loveable characters portrayed by adult actors, but throws in a few new ones along the way, as they attempt to find their way to the mysterious and magical city of Oz. What differs a bit in this version is the participation by the children in the audience! No matter the version or the year, this timeless message still rings true - no matter how we far we travel there is simply no place like home.
Theatre Arlington held its 45th Annual Stony Awards at 6:30pm on Sunday, September 24th, 2018, honoring actors, designers, directors, volunteers and community partners for excellence in the productions during the 2017-2018 45th anniversary season. Guests gathered at the theater for drinks before the show and were then treated to a fun, light-hearted show with Interim Executive Producer, Steven D. Morris serving as the Master of Ceremonies and Don Powers on the piano, with entertainment by some of Theatre Arlington's favorite performers: Nik Blocker, Dawn Prejean, Tevin Cates, Donovan Lawson, Emily-Kate Ivey, Daniel Hernandez and Ashlyn Nichols. Plus, an unexpected surprise visit by Spiderman! Afterwards, all gathered in the lobby for more celebrating with drinks and a reception, sponsored in part by Cooper Street Bakery.
Main Street is sizzling with the opening production of Theatre Arlington's 46th season, 9 to 5 The Musical. This witty and delightful musical is based on the 1980 hit movie, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, one of the original screenwriters. The unlikeliest of friends, Violet, Judy and Doralee, combine forces to take control of their company and their egotistical boss, intent on keeping them and every other woman "in their place." As their plan spins wildly out of control, these women unite to seek their sweet revenge, but in so doing - shatter the stereotypes and find true friendship, independence and prove there is nothing they can't do. What a way to make a living!

If you haven't made your way down to Good Company Players' production of "Spamalot" yet, there's something you've forgotten, and that's to "laugh and smile and dance and sing." Based on every dry-humored person's favorite film, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," the riotous musical stays true to the movie's ridiculous antics while adding in some new elements that give the story an actual point and a feel-good takeaway.
When Daniel Hernandez Jr. was twenty-years-old he was working as an intern for U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. On January 8, 2011, during a 'Congress on Your Corner' event, Giffords was shot. Daniel Hernandez's quick thinking helped to save Giffords's life until the paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital. Hernandez's bravery and heroism has been noted by many, including President Barack Obama.
Yes, yes, yes. It's a talkie. It's a musical talkie. And it has plenty of tap dancing cavaliers (well, in a figurative sense). OK, so it's not Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds; no one can beat the pair that made the classic film so memorable. But Good Company Players' lovely recreation for the Roger Rockas Dinner Theatre stage has no trouble getting audiences in the mood for dancing and 'Singin' in the Rain.'
