It's been quite a year at the Beck Center! Earlier in the season the startlingly good SPRING AWAKENING captivated audiences. Dorothy Silver, the grand dame of Cleveland theatre, spun her web of talent over THE VELOCITY OF AUTUMN. BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON with Dan Folino is rocking the complex's Studio Theater in an extended run, and now LEGALLY BLONDE opened with an eye focused on audiences in the Mackey Theatre.
Beck Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the extension of their regional premiere of the award-winning rock musical, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, through Sunday July 22, 2012 in the Studio Theater. Several weeks ago a study listed George W. Bush among the worst presidents of the United States. Also on that list was Andrew Jackson. However, in contrast to Bush, Jackson was also on the roll of the best presidents. That dichotomy is well noted in BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON, now rocking the Studio Theatre at The Beck Center for the Arts.
'Meet America's first political maverick, who kicked British butt, shafted the Indians and smacked down the Spaniards all in the name of these United States. Who cares if he didn't have the constitutional right? This award-winning rock musical recreates and reinvents the life of 'Old Hickory,' one of our nation's founding rock stars, from his humble beginnings on the Tennessee frontier to his days as our seventh Commander-in-Chief in the Oval Office.'

Last year Ensemble Theatre produced playwright Rajiv Joseph's HUCK AND HOLDEN. It was filled with humor and creative storytelling. Those attending Ensemble's newest venture into Joseph's work, GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES, will experience the same type of storytelling, but will probably find the production less satisfying.
When Martin Friedman, Artistic Director of The Lakeland Civic Theatre, announced he was staging Stephen Sondheim's ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, there were some raised eyebrows in the theatre community. Friedman is a Sondheimophile. He knows the master's works well. Why would he even adventure into Whistle land, which is fraught with land mines?
