BWW Review: RAGTIME at Dallas Summer Musicals
by Kyle Christopher West - May 26, 2016

Walking into the Music Hall at Fair Park Tuesday night, I was extremely eager to enjoy Ahrens and Flaherty's lavish, Tony Award-winning score in the tour of RAGTIME. Together with Terrence McNally's dynamic script, RAGTIME is celebrated as perhaps one of the greatest book musicals of the past two decades. Unfortunately, in spite of all of its inherent strengths, technical troubles plagued the tour's opening night performance. I left the theatre completely disappointed.

A timeless celebration of life, RAGTIME tells the stories of an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician - set in turn-of-the-century New York - all three united by their desire and belief in a brighter tomorrow. Their compelling stories are told to theatre's richest and most glorious Tony Award®-winning score of heavily syncopated or 'ragged' rhythms, a defining characteristic of the Progressive Era.

BWW Reviews: THE LITTLE MERMAID at Dallas Summer Musicals
by Kyle Christopher West - Mar 17, 2016

Although I don't remember seeing the film of THE LITTLE MERMAID in theatres, I do recall being five years old when the VHS tape was released. Watching on the 12-inch screen in my grandmother's guest room, I'd sing as I played, rewound and replayed the tape for hours on end. The fact that I'd have to wait for years to play my dream role onstage was then unimaginable. Later, when the Broadway production opened in 2007, not only had I not grown into a mezzo-soprano mermaid, but I'd also begun a different job with Disney Theatricals as a manager in their New Amsterdam Theatre. Despite sitting in on several meetings about Disney's plans to renovate the Lunt-Fontane Theatre for Ariel and her friends, I somehow never found myself "under the sea" during the show's brief run. This weekend's performance by Dallas Summer Musicals definitely showed me what I'd missed!
