Under the direction of Artistic Director Curt Columbus, Trinity Rep's production examines how the musical, which is set in 1906, reflects the country's current political and social climate. Based on the celebrated 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow, the musical tackles race, women's rights, immigration, and workers' rights. Ragtime runs April 26 - May 27 in Trinity Rep's Elizabeth and Malcom Chace Theater, with press opening on Monday, April 30 at 7:30 pm. Tickets start at $25. Trinity Repertory Company announced today that three area residents will be honored at its 2018 Pell Awards Gala on Monday, May 21, 2018 in Providence. Pawtucket-based designer and artist Morris Nathanson will receive a Rhode Island Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts. Longtime Providence philanthropist and arts advocate Jane S. Nelson will receive the Charles Sullivan Award for Distinguished Service in the Arts. The Pell Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts will go to Jeannine Chartier in recognition of her work with VSA arts Rhode Island. Additional honorees will be announced at a later date.

Trinity Repertory Company is delighted to announce Rhode Island Latino Arts's (RILA) executive director Marta V. Martinez has been invited to join the theater as an Artist-in-Residence. As an Artist-in-Residence, Martinez will advise Trinity Rep as they develop theater-based programs by and for the Latinx people of Rhode Island. Martinez will also study how Trinity Rep produces their plays, develops new work, and structures their theater education programs for young people, in the hopes of creating an independent bilingual theater company.
Beginning in the 2018-19 academic year, Brown University will provide scholarship funds to cover the full cost of tuition for all returning and future students in the Brown University / Trinity Rep master of fine arts (MFA) programs in acting and directing.

The women's dedication to each other and the theater is a delightful celebration of art and community.
Occasionally the name Anton Chekhov invokes the same kind of anxiety one may get from Shakespeare or other heavy literary writers who we feel like we should go see to appear educated/ arty, but who no one really enjoys. Unfortunately, that makes people forget one of the reasons Chekhov and Shakespeare are great--they know how to balance humor and drama in that way that feels very human and well-rounded. It activates all the parts of the viewer's brain, and leaves one feeling thoroughly entertained and thought-provoked at the end. The Gamm's production of UNCLE VANYA, translated and directed by Curt Columbus' manages to communicate volumes, while keeping everything accessible and relatable. The moments of humor are genuine and serve to heighten the tension in other scenes. Gamm regulars will have seen these actors in a dozen other roles over the years, yet they all managed to adopt their new personas in a way that feels so genuine it's like this world has always existed, and the audience managed to wander in at exactly the right time.
Trinity Repertory Company will open William Shakespeare's Othello in February. This production continues Trinity Rep's long tradition of generating productions of Shakespearean plays that are relevant and accessible to adult and student audiences throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Under the direction of Brown/Trinity Rep MFA alumna Whitney White '15, the powerful play will explore military themes, as well as the friendships and relationships that form the basis for the legendary story of betrayal and jealousy. The play runs approximately two hours and 20 minutes with one 15 minute intermission. Othello runs February 15 through March 18, with press opening on Monday, February 19 at 7:30 pm. The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) starts the new year with Curt Columbus' critically acclaimed translation of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. Columbus, artistic director for Providence's Trinity Repertory Company, also directs this classic world drama.
Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation (SDCF), the not-for-profit foundation of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, has opened the application for the first of this season's two Charles Abbott Fellowships and announced the timetable for the second Fellowship application process. The fellowship opportunities will be with Curt Columbus, artistic director of Trinity Repertory Company in Providence RI on his production of the musical Ragtime at Trinity Rep, and with Joseph Haj, artistic director of the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis MN on his production of the musical West Side Story at The Guthrie.
