Austin Opera's SILENT NIGHT A Hard Look at The Unchanged Reality of War

With just a little over ten weeks until the 67th Wexford Festival Opera kicks-off, some updates to the artistic programme have been announced.

Opera Orlando returns to the intimate setting of the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts for part of their 2018-2019 season. Three productions comprise The Opera on the Main Stage series as the company presents its third season of fully staged operas. The company also will inaugurate its Opera on the Town series in 2018-2019, performances in various venues in Central Florida. Numerous special events also will be held.

Nothing's better than learning from the pros. And that's exactly what Opera Orlando and Valencia College have in store for the college's voice students this spring. Two of Opera Orlando's stars from their upcoming production of Rossini's "Cinderella" -- baritone Craig Irvin and soprano Samantha Barnes Daniel -- will teach master classes at Valencia College during March and then return to the college in April for a joint recital with their students.

Utah Opera's 40th anniversary season continues this month with an all-new production of American composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer's opera adaptation of Melville's classic novel, Moby-Dick. This production, which features new sets and costumes by the Utah Opera Production Studios, uses traditional, theatrical staging designed to be economically viable and practical for a wide range of companies. Utah Opera will give five performances of Moby-Dick at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre on January 20, 22, 24, 26 at 7:30 PM, and January 28 at 2 PM. In conjunction with the centennial of World War I and the Kansas City debut of the Pulitzer Prize winning production of Silent Night, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City presents Over There! at the National World War I Museum tonight, August 23. This 1914 field dining experience, co-chaired by Trudy and Jack Gabriel, will include a cabaret performance featuring music of the era.
