Joshua Gersen Named Assistant Conductor of New York Philharmonic for 2015-16 Season

Joshua Gersen, age 30, has been named New York Philharmonic Assistant Conductor beginning in September 2015. He will assist Music Director Alan Gilbert and all guest conductors throughout the season, and will lead educational events, including Young People's Concerts and Young People's Concerts for Schools.

The sixth season of CONTACT!, the New York Philharmonic's new-music series, continues with "New Music from Nordic Countries," Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, with Met Museum Presents, led by Music Director Alan Gilbert and Assistant Conductor Courtney Lewis. Alan Gilbert will conduct the New York Premiere of Per Norga?rd's Cello Concerto No. 2, Momentum, with Philharmonic cellist Eric Bartlett as soloist, and Kalevi Aho's Chamber Symphony No. 2; Courtney Lewis will conduct the U.S. Premiere of the string orchestra version of Kaija Saariaho's Terra Memoria, and the U.S. Premiere of ?uro Z?ivkovic?'s The White Angel.

On the heels of a cancelled appearance with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), 80-year old, Spanish-born conductor Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos has withdrawn from performances with the Houston Symphony scheduled for March 21, 22 and 23. Ailing from pneumonia-like symptoms that caused him to swoon on the podium during Friday's concert with the NSO, Fruhbeck is convalescing under a doctor's care. In his place and with the luck of the Irish upon them, the Houston Symphony has signed Belfast-born conductor Courtney Lewis, himself recently named Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic beginning in the 2014-15 season. This will be Lewis' debut with the Houston Symphony, leading the combined forces of the orchestra, the Houston Symphony Chorus and four renowned vocalists, in a program of Stravinsky's Pulcinella (complete) and Beethoven's inspirational Mass in C.

Courtney Lewis, age 29, has been named New York Philharmonic Assistant Conductor beginning in September 2014. Current Assistant Conductor Case Scaglione, age 31, will be promoted to Associate Conductor, also to begin in September 2014. They will assist Music Director Alan Gilbert and all guest conductors throughout the season, and will lead educational events, including School Day Concerts and Young People's Concerts. Joshua Weilerstein, who has been Assistant Conductor along with Mr. Scaglione since September 2011, will conclude his tenure as Assistant Conductor at the end of the 2013-14 season.
