Circle in the Square Theatre School's 'Festival of Theater' Kicks Off Today

Circle in the Square Theatre School's annual Spring 'Festival Of Theater,' featuring five full-length productions of plays and musicals performed by its graduating class, begins this weekend with the School's production of THE SEAGULL by Anton Chekhov, directed by Alan Langdon. 'Festival Of Theater' performances are open to the public for a $5 suggested donation and take place at Broadway's famed Circle in the Square Theatre (50thStreet between Broadway and Eighth Avenue).

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 5/2- THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

Today in 2005, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where it ran for 1136 performances. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a one act musical comedy conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin and additional material by Jay Reiss. The show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally-quirky grown-ups. The 2005 Broadway production, directed by James Lapine, was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Book. The show has spawned various other productions in the U.S., including a national tour with performances in Canada, and Australian productions.

International City Theatre Opens DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE, 6/7

An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet cafe. A stranger at the next table who has had enough. And a dead man, with a lot of loose ends. Richard Israel directs Dead Man's Cell Phone, a wildly imaginative and off-center romantic comedy by MacArthur "Genius" Grant recipient Sarah Ruhl, opening on June 7 at International City Theatre (ICT) in the Long Beach Performing Arts Center. Two low-priced previews take place on June 5 and 6.

Tony Award Winners Chuck Cooper and Brent Carver Join Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad in ROMEO & JULIET on Broadway

Tony Award-winning actor Brent Carver returns to Broadway this August, to play Friar Laurence in the new Broadway production of Shakespeare's timeless love story ROMEO AND JULIET, starring international film star Orlando Bloom and Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad as Shakespeare's titular star-crossed lovers. Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper also joins the cast, taking on the role of Lord Capulet, in place of the previously announced Joe Morton, who is unable to continue with the production due to scheduling conflicts with his recurring role on a television series.

Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad to Lead David Leveaux-Helmed ROMEO AND JULIET on Broadway; Opens September 19 at Richard Rodgers Theatre

According to the New York Times, Shakespeare's classic romatic tradgedy Romeo and Juliet is coming back to Broadway this summer. Helmed by David Leveaux, the production will star Tony nominee Condola Rashad and Orlando Bloom- making his Broadway debut in the role. Joining them in the play, which is set to open on September 19 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, will be Jayne Houdyshell as the Nurse and Joe Morton as Lord Capulet.

Actors Theatre of Louisville to Present O GURU GURU GURU as Part of 2013 Humana Festival, 3/20-4/7

Artistic Director Les Waters and Managing Director Jennifer Bielstein have announced O Guru Guru Guru, or why I don't want to go to yoga class with you by Mallery Avidon, directed by former Actors Theatre directing intern Lila Neugebauer. The play will run in the Victor Jory Theatre beginning on March 20, opening March 22 and running through April 7th. The production is part of the 37th Humana Festival of New American Plays, made possible by a generous grant from the Humana Foundation.
