The MET Live in HD presents for the first time the contemporary opera of Marnie, with music by composer Nico Muhly and libretto by Nicholas Wright. This co-production with the English National Opera is based on Winston Graham's novel, which inspired Alfred Hitchcock to direct the thriller of the same title.

The Lark Theater is pleased to present Marnie by Nico Muhly, as part of their 2018-19 season of The Met Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera's award-winning series of live high-definition cinema simulcasts.

Nico Muhly's MARNIE, aided and abetted by Nicholas Wright's libretto, dramaturg Paul Cremo and the sweeping production of Michael Mayer--which had its US premiere Friday night at the Met--is that fabled “riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.” Nothing is quite what it seems or results in easy answers--for the characters or the audience.

When the Met's literary advisor asked Nicholas Wright what he thought about doing the libretto for MARNIE, he said yes because he was really interested in working with composer Nico Muhly and Michael Mayer. He was somewhat reserved, however, about whether it was a good opera subject. That was understandable, of course, when he admitted, laughing, a case of mistaken identity.

The 2018-19 season of The Met: Live in HD will continue at the Warner Theatre on Saturday, November 10 with the Met premiere of Muhly's MARNIE at 12:55 pm in the Nancy Marine Studio.

Isabel Leonard sings the title character's aria, with composer Nico Muhly at the piano and Nadia Sirota on viola, at National Sawdust. “Marnie” has its U.S. premiere at the Met on October 19.

The Metropolitan Opera presents the North American premiere of Marnie, an original Met commission by composer Nico Muhly and librettist Nicholas Wright, on October 19, 2018, with performances continuing until November 10. Based on Winston Graham's haunting novel, which also inspired the classic Alfred Hitchcock film, Marnie is conducted by Robert Spano in his Met debut and directed by Michael Mayer, who created the staging for the opera's world premiere at English National Opera in 2017. The November 10 matinee will be transmitted live to movie theaters throughout the world as part of the Met's Live in HD series.

The Metropolitan Opera's annual Summer HD Festival, which presents free outdoor screenings of operas on Lincoln Center Plaza, will return for the tenth time this summer, with one screening each night from Saturday, August 25, to Monday September 3, 2018 (Labor Day). The series will present ten recent performances from the company's acclaimed Live in HD series of movie theater transmissions. As a prelude to the festival, the Marx Brothers' classic film, A Night at the Opera, will be presented on the plaza on Friday, August 24, in association with the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
