If the squeals and cheers of Paper Mill's opening night audience is any indication, the brand new stage version of the 1992 Disney musical film Newsies (a financial flop that has gained a cult following through the years) should prove to be a popular hit among playgoers who enjoy hearing attractive young men belting pop anthems and watching them leap across the stage performing athletic spins and flips.  But underneath the flashy performances of its title ensemble, Newsies is a slow-moving, workmanlike musical that takes an interesting, historic episode in the American labor movement and presents it as the kind of spunky entertainment that takes formulaic aim at the heart without earning any emotional payback through well-crafted storytelling.

Paper Mill Playhouse's production of a new Disney stage musical, Newsies, will officially open tonight. Revolutionary newsie Jack Kelly will be portrayed by Jeremy Jordan of Broadway's West Side Story and Rock of Ages. Tony® Award nominee John Dossett will play newspaper giant Joseph Pulitzer.

Two-time Tony Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Bobby Cannavale will star as Nick Arnstein opposite Lauren Ambrose, who will star as Fanny Brice, in the first Broadway revival of FUNNY GIRL since the 1964 original production. FUNNY GIRL, which features music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and book by Isobel Lennart, will be directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher. FUNNY GIRL will play at Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles from January 15 through February 26, 2012. According to a report by Baz Bamigboye for Daily Mail, the Barbican production of SOUTH PACIFIC, which runs through October 1, might be making a West End transfer following the UK tour. Additional details have not yet been announced.

The hosts of 'The View' introduced the world television premiere performance of the brand new Disney stage musical, 'NEWSIES,' adapted from the popular Disney film starring Christian Bale, this week. Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who wrote music for the 1992 motion picture 'Newsies' and has won eight Oscars© for such memorable scores as 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Pocahontas,' helped introduce the cast performance medley of both 'Santa Fe' and 'Seize The Day.'

According to Ken Davenport, lead producer for the upcoming revival of GODSPELL, a cast recording will be made for the new production.
