We are very pleased to announce that the Finborough Theatre's Pearson Playwright-in-Residence Anders Lustgarten has won the Catherine Johnson Award for Best Play for A Day at the Racists, which received its world premiere at the Finborough Theatre in March 2010. It is the third major award for the Finborough Theatre in the last three weeks, following its recent awards of The Empty Space Peter Brook Award 2010 and The Writers' Guild New Writing Encouragement Award 2010 for Artistic Director Neil McPherson.
New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert will launch the second season of CONTACT!, the Orchestra's new-music series, leading Philharmonic musicians in concerts on Friday, November 19, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. at Peter Norton Symphony Space, and Saturday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m., at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The centerpiece of the program will be the World Premiere of Souvenir (in memoriam Gérard Grisey), a New York Philharmonic Commission by Magnus Lindberg, The Marie Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence, written as a tribute to his late teacher, followed by Grisey's own Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil, performed by soprano Barbara Hannigan, who made her critically acclaimed New York Philharmonic debut last season as Gepopo in Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre. The CONTACT! concerts, which are curated by Mr. Lindberg, began in the 2009-10 season as a showcase for emerging and established contemporary composers.
Virginia's Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre presents the legendary Hollywood musical Sunset Boulevard running December 7, 2010 through February 13, 2011. Headlining the production is Broadway's Florence Lacey (Evita; Hello Dolly!; Signature's Follies) as the tragic silent film star Norma Desmond [as previously announced], complemented by D.B. Bonds (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Signature's The Visit) as Joe, Susan Derry (Wonderful Town) as Betty, and Ed Dixon (The Iceman Cometh, The Three Musketeers) as Max von Mayerling. It's a De La Guarda-type event and spectacle that adds a late-night attraction to 'La MaMa Puppet Series IV--Built to Perform.' Virginia's Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre today announced the full casting for its new production of the legendary Hollywood musical Sunset Boulevard running December 7, 2010 through February 13, 2011.
CHESS opened at the Signature Theatre on August 10 and will run through September 26. The cast is lead by Jill Paice (Curtains, The 39 Steps) as Florence Vassy, Euan Morton (Boy George in Taboo, Sondheim on Sondheim) as Anatoly Sergievsky and Jeremy Kushnier (Footloose, Rent) as Freddie Trumper. The rock musical is directed by Signature's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer. Written by Mamma Mia! composers Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson with Evita and Lion King lyricist Tim Rice, the 1984 cult musical of Cold War competition in love and chess is being given its first major Washington area production. Chess is being performed in the fabulous intimacy of the 276-seat MAX Theatre.
