From Thursday, July 21, to Sunday, July 24, Houston will host the 20th annual QFest, a LGBTQ film festival programmed by artistic director Kristian Salinas, with screenings in venues throughout the city. This year, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, screens six films examining familial bonds and connections, a recurring theme in this year's festival. Selections also include a tribute to Italian filmmaker Liliana Cavani, director of The Skin, an Italian war film, and The Night Porter, which follows the story of a former concentration camp victim who encounters a previous abuser. Buffalo's Irish Classical Theatre is doing what they so often do best- presenting a classic, like their current production of Oscar Wilde's AN IDEAL HUSBAND, with subtlety and care. Wilde is know for his comedies of manners and society, and in AN IDEAL HUSBAND we are treated to a delicate balance of marital discord and political subterfuge.
Good direction, good acting - particularly from the always dependable Liz Vermeulen - and an intriguing plot idea combine to hold the audience's attention in 'The Vapours' at the Overtime, in spite of some deep flaws in a play that implodes at the end under the weight of expectations and ideas that are left unresolved.
