Casting has just been announced for the 13th Street Rep's forthcoming production of ASCAP Award-winning playwright/director Chip Deffaa's new show "The Irving Berlin Ragtime Revue." The show, which opens November 9th, will be the third production of Deffaa's to play this year at the 13th Street Theater.
Playwright Chip Deffaa says he never dreamed, when his musical play "One Night with Fanny Brice," first opened Off-Broadway at St. Luke's Theater in the 2011-2012 season, that the starring role would someday be played by a teenager. Over the past three years, stars in their 30s, 40s, and 60s have played the show, which transferred in 2013 to the 13th Street Repertory Theater. Chloe Brooks, who now stars in the show, after previously serving as an understudy, is just 17.
Casting has just been announced for the 13th Street Rep's production of ASCAP Award-winning playwright Chip Deffaa's new musical comedy 'Theater Boys.' The show, which opens September 21st, will run in repertory this fall at the 13th Street Repertory Theater (50 W. 13th Street, NYC,,www.13thstreetrep.org), along with Deffaa's musical play 'One Night with Fanny Brice' (starring Chloe Brooks), and Israel Horovotz's 'Line' (now in its 40th year at the theater), which is New York's longest-running production. A cast album for 'Theater Boys'--now in the works--will be released in October. And the Rep, according to founder/artistic director Edith O'Hara, has plans to present two additional shows by Deffaa, following 'Theater Boys.'

Chip Deffaa's new musical play "Irving Berlin's America," which opened Sunday, June 15th at the 13th Street Repertory Theater, will have a post-performance celebration tonight (Thursday June 19th). "We're inviting the audience to stay after the show for some cake and soda, and a post-show discussion with the cast about Berlin. We have a lot to celebrate," noted writer/director Deffaa. "The show, which just opened, has just found a publisher. And we're celebrating the birthday of costar Giuseppe Bausilio, who is turning 17. If there's a more talented 17-year-old out there, I haven't met him! And if that were not enough, this is also the anniversary of the day Berlin copyrighted his first hit, more than 100 years ago!"
ASCAP award-winning writer Chip Deffaa, joined by director Rachel Hundert and star Chloe Brooks, will give a talkback on the legendary Fanny Brice, after Monday's performance of Deffaa's show, 'One Night with Fanny Brice,' at the 13th Street Repertory Company (50 W. 13th St., NYC, www.13thStreetRep.org).

His musical play, 'Irving Berlin's America'--co-starring stage/screen veteran Michael Townsend Wright and young Giuseppe Bausilio from Broadway's 'Billy Elliot' and 'Newsies'--opens June 15th at the 13th Street Repertory Theater. The premiere recording (Original Cast Records) has recently been released to enthusiastic reviews.

If 'Adam's Rib' and 'Moneyball' mated and begat a play, it might be 'Skybox,' a comedy of class warfare and the battle of the sexes that is set in the luxury box of a major league baseball park. The play, written by Walt Stepp and directed by Lissa Moira, is the successor to their collaboration on 'Siren's Heart: Norma Jean and Marilyn in Purgatory,' a play by Stepp which started at Theater for the New City and is now running Off-Broadway at the Actors Temple Theatre. 'Skybox' has been extended at Theater for the New City through December 9, 2012. Get a first look at the show in the photos below!
