Barrymore Haas Nominees Announced; Awards Set for 10/4

The Theatre Alliance announced the finalists for the prestigious F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist at a press conference today at New Freedom Theatre. This year's nominees are actors James Ijames, Steve Pacek, Sarah Sanford, Amanda Schoonover, and designer Thom Weaver. The recipient will be awarded at the Barrymore Awards Ceremony on October 4 at the Walnut Street Theatre.

Metropolitan Playhouse, 'theatrical archaeologist extraordinaire' (Backstage), presents a revival of The Drunkard, or The Fallen Saved by W. H. Smith. First presented in Boston in 1844, and later by P.T. Barnum in New York in 1848, The Drunkard now receives its first professional production in the city since 1993. Frank Kuhn comes to New York to direct Metropolitan's revival at 220 E 4th Street September 18th through October 17th, 2010.

The production will run July 24 - August 29, 2010 at Piven Theatre Workshop, 927 Noyes Street. Press opening is Monday, July 26, 2010 at 7:30PM.

Philadelphia Theatre Company kicks off its 35th Anniversary Season with PTC@PLAY, a new play festival running October 5-21 at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre (Broad and Lombard Streets). The Festival, with staged readings of works by established playwrights as well as new voices, features Casa Cushman, by Leigh Fondakowski in conjunction with the Tectonic Theater Project, Strongman's Ghost by Jeffrey Hatcher, What We're Up Against by Theresa Rebeck, How To Write A New Book For The Bible by Bill Cain and Milk Like Sugar by Kirsten Greenidge. All readings are free with curtain time at 7:00 PM.

The Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia announced the nominees for the Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre Education and Community Service at a press conference on Monday, August 2nd at New Freedom Theatre. The nominees are 1812 Production's 1812 Outreach, B. Someday Productions' Of Mythic Proportions, and Philadelphia Young Playwrights' Annual Playwriting Festival. The recipient will be announced at the Barrymore Awards Ceremony on Monday, October 4th at 7:00 PM at the Walnut Street Theatre.

The 2010 Barrymore nominees have been announced! Created in 1994, The Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre are the Greater Philadelphia region's only comprehensive theatre awards program, recognizing artists for excellence and innovation while serving to increase awareness of the richness of the local theatre community. The Barrymore Awards are a nationally recognized symbol of excellence for theatre in this region, raising the bar for the work produced by local theatres and individual artists, and generating significant coverage in all the local newspapers and in national trade publications.Each year, over 120 shows produced by the region's professional theatres are reviewed by the Barrymore Voters. At the annual awards presentation each Fall, the Barrymore Awards are presented to honor the community's collective achievement.
