This week, we go around our Broadway World to feature stories in Rhode Island, Milwaukee, Seattle and more. Check out our top 10 stories around our Broadway World below, which include THE HEIDI CHRONICLES in Rhode Island, the 40th Anniversary of Milwaukee Rep's A CHRISTMAS CAROL, and Seattle Rep's JINKX MONSOON & MAJOR SCALES: UNWRAPPED, just to name a few.
THE HEIDI CHRONICLES follows the career, social activities and love life of Heidi Holland, through 1970's & 80's . While hers is not an everywoman story, there is still something that every woman today has gone through or will face in the future, namely, the quest to 'have it all', the question of whether or not that's even possible and what it means to be a feminist. If that all sounds too heavy, don't worry. This play has a lightness of tone that belies the serious issues underneath, and really strikes the perfect note of intelligent discourse with a heavy dose of levity.
Trinity Rep continues Season 52 Rebels, Renegades and Pioneers with Wendy Wasserstein's Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy, The Heidi Chronicles, directed by Vivienne Benesch. Performances run December 3, 2015 through January 3, 2016.
When you see as many shows as I do as a theater reviewer there are shows that, on the surface, make you concerned as to what you're about to see. Such a show was "Orpheus Descending" developed and performed by the Williams Project at 12th Avenue Arts as part of the Intiman Theatre Festival. I mean we're talking about a 3 hour Tennessee Williams play put on by a brand new to Seattle theatre company. But it's moments like this that make being a theater reviewer worth all the time spent when that trepidation turns into absolute awe-inspired elation at seeing a beautifully simple, well thought out and brilliantly portrayed production such as this that ranks up there with one of the best things I've seen all year.
Melancholy Play: A Chamber Musical, begins as one might expect-- with a song about being melancholy. Set in what looks like the aftermath of a New Year's eve party with gold tinsel strewn about the floor, and a sad, saggy banner on the back wall. Our five characters regale the audience a song of melancholy setting the audience up for a witty, if nonsensical 90 minutes.
Trinity Rep closes out Season 51: The Necessity of Human Connection with the world premiere of Tony-nominated playwright Sarah Ruhl and composer Todd Almond's Melancholy Play: a chamber musical, directed by Obie Award-winner Liesl Tommy. Melancholy Play: a chamber musical runs now through June 28, 2015 in Trinity Rep's Dowling Theater. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!
